Yeah... OI! I want to scream at Eragon each time he so much as glaces at Arya! But anyway... I do agree with you. LDM, it is sadly, but surely true. I mean, if you have to add to an already perfect masterpiece, at least make some characters that won't make Tolkien turn in his grave! Seriously, why oh why oh why, is it ALWAYS a Lego romance fic?! OR theres always the Thranduil is an abusive father theory, and really, why would he abuse his son? And only heir? Yes, the elves are immortal, but what if something happened to him, or if he decided to sail? where would Mirkwood be then? Ugh. Anyway...

*gasp* People write Abusive Thranduil stories?!?!?! I've never run across one of those. Why do they have to ruin one of the coolest not-so-well-described characters in Arda like that? He's awesome, IMO. And he's got an awesome name, too.

*Shakes head* Ow. That hurt. I had a bit of a tobogganing accident yesterday. But anyway. Yeah, I've never come across those either. Isn't Thranduil fun to say, though? Thranduil. Thranduil.
Do you really, SG? I always wish that she'd finally accept him and then they could get it over with. Even though Eragon is a bit of an idiot, if I were Arya I might not like him either.

If I were Arya I'd stick a knife in his guts. I really would. He's that annoying.
I never really considered how much fun Thranduil is to say, Meldawen. Lol--it should actually come out the same way if it was spelled Dhranduil. Almost the same way, I suppose--the way it rolls off your tongue would be slightly different. *tests* yep.
You're lucky you have enough snow to go Tobogganning--we've just got cold rain over here. And yet it's still above freezing, so we don't even get awesome ice.

Now that I think about it, Eragon is a marty-sam! (I prefer Gary-Stu.. but oh well!)

If someone's writing a story in an original universe and has a character like Arya or Eragon, everyone loves and adores the characters and thinks nothing of their ridiculous level of perfection. But if I, as a fanfic writer, bring in a character that's half as perfect as Arya, I would be flamed and accused of unoriginality.

there is a almost foolproof plan to avoid that. Or at least it works for me. Kill of the ones people get mad about and write about the kids and remaining characters. Works great in my fics.
then all my characters seem to have serious issues, so don't ask me!
I think I've only written a few marys and martys in my life. When I was like, ten, and just started writing. i'm better now.

Dhranduil, eh? Thranduil. Dhranduil. It is slightly different...the 'th' is a bit of a harder sound, somehow.
I don't feel lucky, quite frankly. One isn't apt to when one has scrapes all over one side of her face and a swollen lip. I'm kinda sore, too. But this isn't the griping thread.
That Arya comment made me laugh. Somehow I don't think I'd be quite that bloodthirsty!
Boy, you don't even wanna know what my character looked like when I started writing. I didn't even know what a Mary-Sue was then, so naturally all my characters were them.

Yeah, the "th" has a harder sound.
I'd consider myself lucky to have big scrapes all over, and a swollen lip, but that's just because my twin sister and I are in an ongoing competition to see who can get the cooler bruises, cuts, gashes, and scars. Aka, injuries. I'm currently in the lead, because New Years Eve I spilled a bunch of boiling water over my arm (entirely by accident) and now I've got an awesome reddish-purple burn there.
I don't think my first characters were extremely Marty-Sam-ish--I've almost always gone for the 'background' characters--the sidekicks and loyal companions, etc. At least, that's how they start out. And while I might have made them awesome fighters, I managed to avoid making them seem extremely smart--I generally try not to do that, since I don't like having characters that are smarter than I am. But I definitely have had some Marty-Sams in the four years I've been RPing.

My goodness. That seems like a rather harsh plan. I like it.

My first fanfics were horribly Mary-Sue-ish....though I don't think I ever had a Legolas one. That would be the last straw. I don't think they ever involved Legolas, actually. Mostly they involved my RP characters and their past.

I started reading Eragon, and stopped partway through. Part of the reason was that I glanced ahead and read a bit about a beautiful elf-woman named Arya. That was enough for me. lol
I try to keep my characters from being Mary-Sues or Marty-Sams. I like making "normal" characters-like ones that aren't pretty, or have self-confidence issues, or the like. I've found that if I give my character at least one negative trait, that helps me keep them less M-S ish. lol

I would! I would definitely plan something against you, SG. j/k
Lol--I was creative enough to have Marty-Sams when I first started roleplaying. My first one was a Star Wars RPG, and I just gave my Jedi a normal past. Nice and simple. No tragic history or anything. I just had various plot twists along the way to prove how cool my character was, but...everybody did that (to prove how cool their characters were, not mine, lol). So he wasn't much of a Marty-Sam. Just the sort of single-minded warrior that you stick in the front lines to decimate the enemy, and keep him far away from the actual planning.

Um, I think we've basically been discussing our first RPG characters, and how Mary-Suish/Marty-Samish they were. So you didn't miss much of importance.
