I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway." I love the evil but I hate it at the same time! Poor Smeigel. I feel for him because I feel in my own life what was torturing him.

That's a hard question actually.I don't know, I mean Gollum is really sad because Gollum is really annoying and mean to him and Smeagol wants to help the hobbits and Gollum wants to kill them because they have the ring. But I can't help you better.

I agree, but I don't think Gollum is pure evil. I think the ring drove him mad, and now, it's a part of hime, and he can't let it go without a fight. He needs the ring.

Good point felarof. Gollum is not pure evil, just lost - like the sheep in the parable of Christ. He has lost himself into the ring. He is no longer real.

There are no evil things or creatures, only evil desires. And even these desires must be acted on by making wrong choices to transform us to such a degraded state as Gollum. Tolkien says that "nothing is evil in the beginning".

I love what Peter Kreeft says about this in his book Heaven, The Heart's Deepest Longing:

"All things are created by God and therefore good. All that is desirable in things is an image of the supremely desirable God. Therefore even our evil desires are searching for God. There is simply nothing else to desire except God or God's images and reflections. Evil is not desiring evil things but desiring lesser goods and desiring in the wrong way (selfishly, not unselfishly)."

Gollum represents mental instability, obsession, greed, selfishness, and how all of this can be disgusting and yet pitiful.
