I like the title Return of the King better than War of the Rings. Although they are both great titles, I am just so accomstumed to Return of the King.

ROTK is better, simply because it symbolises the point of the entire book- the return of the king to the throne of Gondor, which is what the country needed to stabilise itself again!

I voted for "No" as well.
Return of the King is a more suiting name for the final book of the series... And believe it or not I had no clue who the "King" was when reading the series for the first time. I know, its hard to believe.

I don't think it would have been 'better', just I guess it wouldn't have given it away, because you knew throughout the books...or the movies...that Aragorn wasn't going to die, but oh well. It doesn't really matter.

I actually said yes. I really don't like the way that it gives away the ending. And probably if it had been called War of the Ring, and someone asked you to compare RotK with that name, you would be in favor of War of the Ring. Simply because you're used to it.
My humble opinion...

Kudos to Kitoky for the fabulous signature set, and art credit to engelszorn.

I actually thought that the War of the Ring would have been a better tittle. For one, it gives away less of the ending, but it also summarizes the book pretty well without completely revealing the plot.

I think that The War of the Ring would've been better...
a) Because The Professor know what he was doing when he wanted that title...
b) It doesn't give away the ending
and
c) Because I like the abbreviation... WotR. It looks cool. 8)

Of course. Who dares to disagree with the Professor? He did not like the title "The Return of the King" because it already told you what was going to happen (Aragorn becomes king of Gondor, so most likely the Ring will be destroyed as well). "The War of the Ring", however, would have been a better title. It only tells you a war is at hand, but you already knew that, actually.

Yes, I agree with you, but I think that War of the Ring is a good title for the whole trilogy. It already starts in FotR.

I don't agree with that the battle of Plennor Fields and the black gate, determine the fate of middle earth, if they hadn't won that Saron and the orcs would still try to take over even if the ring had been destroyed, simply because he had an army.
WotR, in my opion is the better title.

The Return of the King title should be best left as it is, and not only because I'm used to it being that way, but because The War of the Ring refers to basically everything, almost, not just the third book. The third book is just when all the action intesifies. I like the title War of the Ring, though. Still, it is better left as the Return of the King.

I think Return of the King gives away to much though, it is a very hard desision for Aragorn to make it's a conflict, and to give it away in the title makes that resolution less powerful than it actually is, Aragorn had to come to terms over who he is with one of the greatest evils, corruption by the one ring

Yes, that's a very good insight. But anyway, Gandalf said that line to Denethor at the beginning of RotK. You've got a point though.
