I think that Eowyn is indeed very well adapted in the films. T hey really "catch" her character. But I prefer the book one because she is the one that Prof. Tolkien made.

I prefer her in the books too. In the books, she is more cold, more ambitious and desperate. The film portrayed this ok, but left out the bit where Eowyn gives up her life of warfare and plans on becoming a healer with Faramir. It's amazing how her character develops in the book. She gives up her ambition to find her real purpose in life, which is to give life, not take it away. She states: "The Shadow has departed! I will be a shieldmaiden no longer, nor vie with the great Riders, nor take joy only in the songs of slaying. I will be a healer, and love all tings that grow and are not barren." (RotK, Ch.5) Eowyn is more than a feisty girl with a big sword...she has the ability but finds no comfort in it.
The film gives little of this development in her character.
I'm not saying the films are awful. I really do enjoy them, but they leave some things out that I think are important to the depth of the story...

:notworthy: Amen! I think Vikingmaiden captures exactly my opinion, but in a better way!

^ I totally have to agree :)

But what I missed in both, books and movies, was the relationship between her and Éomer. I really would have had more scenes to find out what they mean to each other, how they influence their lifes, how they treat each other. I really missed that! :confuzzled:

I haven't read the books for a while, but I can remember that when I first read them, I was really angry with Éowyn that she fell in love with Aragorn. But when I finally saw the second movie, I fell in love with her!

I think Eowyn was adapted very well in the movies, so I like both equally.

I would have to say I like her better in the movies - she seems to have a little more personality, and you can understand her on more of a personal level. I guess I think she's more human in the movies....and less cold and shieldmaiden-like. That's not to say I don't like her in the books, however ;)

eowyn is in the books quite abit.she is a very polite princess but gave aragorn some looks.she sure let him know there is a hot girl under the the shield maiden exterior.the movie kept her brilliant speach about fearing a cage.

Book! Except she's Dernhelm for a lot of it...

I really love how much she loves Aragorn in the book when he goes to the Paths of the Dead. I love it even more when she falls in love with Faramir which is a lot bigger in the book!

Also, I think the romantic interaction between Eowyn and Faramir in the book is sweeter. The film just hasn't got enough of it down (obviously, since the film would be a lot longer than it already is!). Plus Tolkien's language is so beautiful and descriptive...the love scenes are so sweet in the book!

Just thought I'd add another Eowyn-thing in there!

I'd have to say I like her more in the books. She really expresses her thoughts more in the book, and of course, is the original. Miranda did a great job portraying, but you can't beat the original

I liked eowyn in both the movies and the books. I think that they portrayed Eowyn's character very accurately. However, as vikingmaiden pointed out, there are aspects of her character that they didn't show in the movies that we missed from the books. Also, the love story between Eowyn and Faramir. That's a huge part of Eowyn as a person and it was almost completely left out in the theatrical version of LOTR.
I think I like book Eowyn better, but only because we get to know her better in the books than in the movies.
