Uhhhh, well I'm not sure we find out WHY per se. But we never REALLY find out "why" about anything on this damn show. BUT, as far as I remember, in season 3, Kate and Sawyer are in those cages for the bears. They must've had a zoo of sorts. Remember they also have/had cows?
Then, this season with...is her name Charlotte? And she was on some dig and she found those remains of a polar bear in the desert with a DHARMA COLLAR.
WHY Dharma has this bizarre fascination with damn polar bears on islands is BEYOND ME. But, hey! That's Lost for yah. _________________ "So what? So plenty!"

Haha, Thanks. I'm glad you like the set. Ben was so hilarious in that scene, and Hurley is always hilarious. Feel free to use the set.
I'm more interested in that Bird that screeches Hurley's name in, I think it was Season 2, then the Polar Bears. Did they ever explain that? It appeared like once and was then basically forgotten about.
