Okay guys, this thread has started to go borderline bashing. Tone it down, and express your opinions ---reasonably---.

I think that the real problem was the Writer's Strike. They had just come back, and usually they spend months writing things, and creating the montages for it. This time, they had very little time to get the writing done, and things made. They weren't ever sure if it was going to happen.
The dresses some of the women wore were gorgeous. Cate Blanchett's dress was amazing... and Viggo's neice had such a gorgeous yellow dress on, and she was so adorable! Helen Mirren's dress was absoloutely stunning, i loved the colour on her, and Ellen Page's dress was so amazing on her.

My only complaints had to do with how I imagined the judging to be done.
This year's films WERE ALL unbelievably amazing. Not that I've seen all the ones nominated, but I've heard greats about most of them.
So, I guess the wide range of winners is just an expression of that.
And as for the boring blandness of the actual ceremony itself, that'd be the power of a strike. Even though it's been over. I wasn't worried about Jon Stewart, because he's just an insane comic genius.
Things could've been better, but given the time they had to prepare...
As for outfits, I loved Viggo's niece's dress! Gorgeous. And Cate was stunning as always. I swear, that woman is like the essence of beauty. Probably even on her worst day, she'd look 100 times better than me. XD And then Helen Mirren, oh my god. She looked rather... royal to me. She like walked out of this light in an amazing red dress.
But I have to say, the ONE thing that stood out in my mind was Nicole Kidman's necklace.
Holy crap. I just STARED at it for the longest time. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. It was insane! GORGEOUS, but just HUGE. XD

Since we're speaking of gowns and the like...
I thought Anne Hathaway's red dress was gorgeous. It was a really elegant look for her. Soairse Ronan's jade green dress was quite lovely as well. She's young, and she didn't overdo it.

I enjoyed it for the most part. Jon Stewart always makes me laugh, so I enjoyed that, even though it seemed at times like he was kinda winging it.
Stupid writer's strike.
I love Anne Hathaway's dress!
Did anyone notice in the opening montage of films (the truck carrying Oscars to the theatre), there was a clip of Aragorn charging with his sword (when he gets off the boat and attacks the orcs)? There might have been another split second LotR clip but I can't remember.

Anne Hathaway's dress was nice, but I didn't like the floral shoulder bit - way over the top.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 3600848384
As much as I hate Helen Mirren, the dress she wore was very, very nice. I'm all for covering up the shoulders!
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 3751843328
I like this dress as well, I have no idea who she is, but it's simple and elegant.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 4271937024
Cate Blanchett could wear a paper bag and look nice. She always looks beautiful without overdoing it.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... m161584640
I do not like Cameron Diaz's dress at all.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 3567293952
I don't like this one either.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 3718288896
Not sure if I like the dress, but beautiful colour and she had sense to wear green as it goes with her red hair.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 3802174976
This one is elegant. Sparkly and 1930's-esque.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 4288779776
Everyone in the UK is raving about this "mermaid" dress, but I'm not sure about it. It looks like it was made out a quilt she had on her bed.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... m497128960
I think for someone young, she should have wore something that wasn't black, but she looks elegant and she hasn't been dressed like a tart. I love the way she's done her hair, and she's so pretty it all works.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 1403098624
I think Nicole Kidman looked great in that dress - I think a necklace or long pendant would have set it off nice - but I think what she did have was a little bit too much - it reminded me of a set of icicle garlands we have at Christmas. XD
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 1956746752
Let's not forget the men! Viggo Mortensen looked as dapper as always.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... m211916288
Daniel Day-Lewis and his missus looked a mess. Who wears brown shoes with a tux?
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... m144807424
Johnny looked perfect to me. He's just as nicely dressed as anyone, but in his own way. I love the "Goth" look that Vanessa seems to have gone for, it just fits.
http://www.imdb.com/features/rto/2008/g ... 1134663168
LOL! Who's have thought I was such a fashion expert.

Well, I only watched the first 15 minutes of the Academy Awards, and then got bored and turned it off... I've only seen a few of the movies that were nominated, so I wasn't that interested. Though I was definitely rooting for Viggo, Cate, and Johnny to win at least something!
I'm having fun reading through this thread, though. Sounds like I didn't miss much at all!

*le gasp* Has Hannah Montana not made it's way into Europe? Count yourself lucky... Here's what Darky had to say about her. Quote: I HATE Miley Cyrus. Why Was she there? No one likes her, she can't act, or sing, and when she smiles the looks like a constipated toad.

Could we not reiterate the bashing? Let's move on to a more pleasant topic.

OH my god. Don't ever watch Hannah Montana. It's a Disney show. XD She's like taking over the world, and it really bothers me.
I too really liked her dress though. Very classy. But I was really shocked that she was a PRESENTER at the freakin' Academy Awards. I suppose just because she's a Disney star...and she was introducing one of the Disney songs nominated. Makes sense in a way. Just...odd. XD
And yes, she's Billy Ray Cyrus' daughter. He, himself, is pretty much awesome. XD
OH!! I forgot to mention how HAPPY I was that what was it, like 3 Disney songs from "Enchanted" were nominated?!
I was just really happy that Alan Menken was nominated again. I remember the days when they OWNED the Best Original Song category.
Too bad they didn't win, but I thought it was really sweet when Jon Stewart brought out that woman who had won, and didn't get to say her thanks. AWWWW!!!

^ alan menken wrote the songs for enchanted, which was they were so awesome that three of them were nominated. "that's how you know" should have won simply because it made me smile so hard it hurt.
to be honest though, i don't get overly fussed about who wins what. the fact that hitchcock never won an oscar for best director completely invalidates the whole thing for me, so i just don't take them seriously. having said that, when my sister wins best actress i will be cheering like a madman.

(So sorry, Kit. )
I'm moving to the UK with you, MontanaBohemian. She is taking over the world. Ohmygosh, she presented at the awards?!? That's... wrong.
Well, JF, it seems that you've learned all you need to about her... Too much... Yeah, I guess it was a nice dress. Huh? She was in trouble for not wearing a seat belt?
I was hoping for an Enchanted song to win. But it was great seeing Amy Adams preform.

LOL let's all bash Miley Cyrus together. She's an ok singer, nothing great, and I don't understand what all the fuss is about.
On the topic of clothing... Daniel Day-Lewis' shoes cracked me up. I didn't notice them pre-show, but the people on E! kept talking about his shoes and I'm still laughing. His (wife? girlfriend?)'s dress was fugly, and did you notice the shoes??? Black and white stripes??? LOL
On Fashion Police, they were talking about Cate's dress and what I thought was part of the dress was actually a necklace. Hmm. Still, she looks gorgeous

Well the Academy have got it wrong many times - I mean Cary Grant never winning?!
And they also are very good at giving people Oscars and Honouray Oscars - and then the people snuffing it only a few months later. Personally, if I was getting on a bit and receiving my first Oscar or an Honourary, I'd run the other way.
@ TT - Yeah, her and her dad was filming something for kids and they were in a car driving and neither of them were wearing seatbelts. Yes, come to the UK, it's a haven of non-Miley-ness.
I didn't notice Daniel Day-Lewis' shoes until it was mentioned on GMTV, I suppose they went with the brown on his jacket but he didn't look smart at all. His wife had tried to hard - she seemed to be a combination of things. And I like men to be smart and dapper in evening dress. Sharp and snazzy. Like Viggo and Johnny.
Black and white actually can be very elegant - some might say boring - but I think I'd rather wear something that is ageless, like black and white, than try to be too different and fail.
Yeah, I thought orignally it was part of the dress and then Isaw it move. I loved the malachite pieces that were on the necklace and the fact she had matching ear-rings.
There were at least 3 pregant women at the Oscar's this year - Cate, Nicole Kidman and Jessica Alba.
