The ceremonies were great this year! I loved the new format. Presenting the awards in the form of making a movie made it really move and called new recognition to all the less known people who do excellent work behind the camera.
Hugh Jackman was just awesome. I enjoyed watching him get right up in front of the actors, and pulling up Anne Hathaway to play Nixon to his Frost. ("Frank Langella was sitting right next to me!") Also, there's Brad and Angelina, both nominated for Oscars tonight. I don't actually have a joke for them, it's just that I'm contractually obligated to mention them at least five times.
I loved the first 30 seconds of "Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails" when it was just him and a bunch of back dancers in evening dress. It was a great throw back to the old 30's Broadway shows.
But why was there so much Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens? If they had added Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers it would have been the Teens' Choice Awards! Maybe it was part of the gimmick for more ratings.
I'm so glad Heath Ledger got an Oscar. I admit I haven't seen any of the other nominees' movies, so I can't adequately judge whether he was the best, but regardless, he did give a great performance that was deserving of recognition. I honestly wasn't expecting him to win. I kind of thought the Academy was giving him a nod because everyone was expecting them to. But he won! and I always had an idea that the Academy is relatively incorruptible when it comes to emotion clouding their judgment.

Oh wow. Yeah. It was really the only part of tonight that I actually think was worth watching for.
...I think he would want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value, and that no matter what anyone tells you God does love you and that very soon I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours.
Bah, I was totally crying at that point. Normally acceptance speeches just strike me as awkward and bumbling and way too self-centered, but this one was incredible.

LOL at the whole Zac Efron/Vanessa Hudgens thing. First Beyonce comes out (why the freak does she have to perform at everything?), and then all of a sudden there's the wonder pair from HSM. And, btw, ZE's hair looked like crap all slicked back. Slicked hair looked good in Hairspray, not in this instance.
Watching Beyonce and Hugh Jackman sing "You're The One That I Want" was torture. Just so frekking cheesy. And lame.

I loved Hugh, he did an exceptional job, and it's nice to see an actual actor hosting a show that awards actors.
I really enjoyed the set up used, and I was very happy about the five actors that came out and we're talking about each of the nominees. I thought that was a very nice appraoch, and it added a human touch to the way in which the nominees were talked about and introduced.
I am very upset that Iron Man didn't win anything, The Heath win was expected, and the boringness of Vanessa and Zac was a useless addition. Haha, Cedric, I mean Edward, I mean Robert was just pointless, he stood there and bowed his head the whole time. STRAIGHTEN UP MAN, YOU HAVE A SPINE, USE IT.
I'm also very happy with Sean Penn's win, his "I know I make it hard sometimes for people to like me" or whatever that was, it was great. And I think it's a great stride for the Academy to pick a movie that supports gay/lesbian equal rights. And his speech was very well done.
I am so very pissed off about the song winner. I've heard all three nominations, and Down to Earth was the clear winner. The other two had none of the meaning and correlation between the movie. Down to Earth was everything you want in a song nomination. It was directly related to the movie, and it was sung wonderfully by PETER GABRIEL, not the weirdo that sang it, whatever his name was.
The mash ups were great, as were Will Smith, Natalie Portman/Ben Stiller and Jennifer Anniston/Jack Black. His line about being in one Dreamworks movie a year, and it losing to Pixar every time was hilarious.
Altogether it was a whole hell of a lot better than last years.

random question...are there any people/films you think should have been nominated, but weren't?
personally, i think ben whishaw deserved a best supporting actor nod for his role as sebastian in brideshead revisited.

The Dark Knight should have been nominated for Best Picture. Period.
It was of a technically higher standard than all the other comic book/superhero films, and I think it was equal to any of the other films.

I didn't end up watching the Oscars. I dunno... maybe I will... or look for clips of it or something... *shrugs*
Either way, I was majorly disappointed with that won. I mean, WALL-E and TDK should have picked up more awards, imo. Like, TDK for cinematography... WALL-E for original screenplay or whatever it's called, and Down to Earth... Seriously... But whatever.
But, hey, I'm thrilled about Heath Ledger. I think that's completly well deserved.
And... oo, now I wanna find the Zac/Venessa clip somewhere...

tbh most of the movies I watch aren't what could be classed at Oscar level....however lol
The Wrestler should have been among the Best Film category for sure. I doubt it would have won, but to be nominated would have been enough for me.
..leads me onto my irritation at Slumdog having 2 noms in the Best Song category, Wall-E had the other. Where was Bruce Springsteen's song?? Two songs from one movie is very unfair imo and they should have chosen one or the other.
Also...where was Hans Zimmer and James Newton-Howard for The Dark Knight OST? Things like this make me question the Academy and what the hell goes through there minds.
I do think that Hellboy 2 should have won best make up. I mean...hello Troll Market? But when you get put in a category with Academy fave Benjamin Button, you don't have a snowballs chance in hell of picking up a wee nekkid gold man.

Oh one thing I absolutely loved about this year's Oscars. Well, it's two words. I'll leave you to guess that?
And I really loved Hugh Jackman's opening number. He was great.

Haha. She had a lovely dress on. Very classy.
I'll have to try and find that bit on YouTube as I didn't get to see it.

Johnny's Fan wrote: I remember the year "Enchanted" had three songs up in that category and it didn't win any of them I believe. So it's strange how the odds work out sometimes.
I actually really liked the music in The Happening which I think was my Newton-Howard, so that should have been nominated.
@ TT - You should check out the best bits on YouTube. You have to watch Hugh Jackman's opening number.
Y'see I don't think that's fair at all. One song per movie should be the limit.
I wonder what songs were excluded from the category that year because they decided to throw in 3 songs from the one movie, leaving little room for anything else.
Agreed, bout the music in Happening, it was beautifully scored.
