And Cate was glowing the entire time! Seriously, you were right JF, she could wear a paper bag and still look gorgeous.
Hmm.. all this Hannah Montana talk. I didn't even know it was her up there really, but I can see what some of you mean about well, we'll leave it at that. I'd rather comment on some of the other lovely people there.
I'm surprised no one made a fuss over Daniel Day-Lewis and his wife. Can you say mismatched? Her dress looked like it had Christmas tinsel on it.
And bringing up Anne Hathaway again... I don't like her very much, but I still think she looked elegant even with the little shoulder thing going on. Oo, and so did Ellen Page! I was really floored by the simple ensemble she put together. So often celebrities overdo the look, but she pulls it off perfectly.

Ya know, I'm convinced male celebrities never get as much attention as the women do when it comes to fashion. Sure, there are people who will critique Viggo, Johnny, and the rest of 'em just as harshly as they do the females, however I can see why it isn't done as often. Men have one goal when choosing a tux: to look suave, sexy, and sophisticated.

Anne Hathaway's dress was my favorite of the night. Amy Ryan's was gorgeous as well, and I loved the dark green on Amy Adams'. Katherine Heigl's dress was also very pretty.
Johnny's Fan wrote: Yeah, I'm surprised more wasn't said about those two. Eccentricty doesn't always mean you can look a mess..... but Tilda Swinton got away with it on BBC and GMTV. That's just how she is, and people love her for it.
Oh, I'm glad those in the UK are praising her dress, because in America they hate it. They bash it right after they finish complaining that no one took any chances with their wardrobe! I thought it was different, but in a way that worked. Certainly not like Mrs. Day-Lewis' black and white striped shoes.
I kind of wish Viggo had gone with less beard, and Johnny clean-shaven, but they still looked good.

Heh, I know what you mean about Viggo's beard. My sister (whose LotR fandom consists of basically swooning over Aragorn and Legolas while mixing up everyone's names XD) gasped in horror when she saw him.
"But...but...Aragon?" (-GORN! I yell loudly in the background.) "But..he's so OLD! He's supposed to be...*stutter*...not...old! SOB!"
It was really funny, actually. Much as she loves him, I don't think she knows quite how old he is.
AHHHHHHH!!!! Why didn't Johnny Depp win? Or Cate Blanchett? And why didn't an Enchanted song win?
Rawr.
Oh well--as JF said, this is about "The Academy giving the wrong awards to the wrong people..."
Honestly, I love watching the Oscars. I was not very impressed with the whole show this year, and for some reason I found John Stewart rather unfunny (perhaps I tuned in at the wrong times--I missed both the beginning and the end and had to make do with an odd chunk in the middle), but still--you have to love the huge crowd, magnificent dresses, and whole big-ness feeling that the Academy brings.
However, I was seriously let down by the lack of a Will Farrel-Jack Black duet this year.
(And did anyone else stand up and SCREAM--no, I mean SCREAM--when RotK was listed on the montage of previous Best Picture winners?)
I've got to watch that year sometime. I admit, I was still a rather naive youngling when RotK came out, and I had never seen the Oscars until last year. I can't imagine watching LotR claim so many awards!!! It would be stunning and amazing and AWESOME to say the least.

^ I know, he has a little gray coming in. And you certainly need to watch that year! I remember screaming and jumping up and down every time RotK won, and I nearly fainted when it won best picture! Ah, that was a good night.
LadyElarinya wrote: Did anyone notice in the opening montage of films (the truck carrying Oscars to the theatre), there was a clip of Aragorn charging with his sword (when he gets off the boat and attacks the orcs)? There might have been another split second LotR clip but I can't remember.
I did see that! They also showed a second of the eagles fighting the Nazguls.

I think men have it easier when it comes to what to wear - but that still doesn't mean someone can't say they look nice.
My mum is like what with Viggo. If she sees him not as Aragorn she'll say "that's not Aragorn, he didn't play him". It's the same with Hugh Jackman, if he looks like anything else other than Wolverine.
I actually like Viggo with a beard - maybe it's because he looks Aragorn-esque - and I like the grey that's coming through - he looks disinguished. If Johnny had to have a beard, I'm glad it was minimal and neat unlike some of the other facial fuzz I've seen on him. I think I'd prefer him cleanshaven - but only if his hair was swept back, which I doubt we'll ever see unless he's in a film.
I never saw any of Jon Stewart - I only popped in to see a category that was interesting to me. It would have been hard for both me and my brother to sit crammed watching it on the computer.
---------------------
One of the best Oscar's I saw was literally the ROTK year with Billy Crystal as host. Does anyone remember the songs he sang for each Best Picture nominee?
Mystic River That Mystic River It's dark and murky As mom's chop liver That Mystic River It's just keeps rolling aloooooooong
There's a shooting And there's a beating It's like a Disney and Eisner meeting But Old Man Eastwood He just keeps rolling alooooooong
Oh, Clint!) You've made hits You don't make schlock You've performed with monkeys And Sandra Locke You produce You write the scores You sang in Paint Your Wagon Don't you sing no mooooooore
Most get weary And sick of tryin' Most men your age are either dead or dyin' But not Clint Eastwood You just keep rolling along!
------------------
Come sail with me, The boat is Russell Crowe It's his damned ship, so don't give him lip Or he'll punch you on the nose....
---------------------
Hobbits with feet big and hairy and smelly More epic battles than Gest and Minelli Ian and Viggo, a queen and some kings This is the gang in the Lord of the Rings.....
He was such a great host. I can't believe they took the clips off YouTube.
And although I don't really like Jack Black or Will Ferrel, their song was great as well....
This is it, your time is through You're boring You're rambling on, no end in sight You're boring No need to thank your parakeet You're boring Look at Catharine Zeta-Jones She's snoring You could have rushed up to the stage But you were lollygagging They're turning off your microphone And cutting to a commercial for Del Taco Del Taco! Del Taco! Del T-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-cooooooo!
And it has been bugging me for over 3 years - what's Del Taco?

i've just looked through all the red carpet pics on imdb, and here is what occured to me:
- cate blanchett is so beautiful it is actually unfair. words cannot describe how jealous i am or how much i would love to look like her.
- james mcavoy needs to become more closely aquainted with a razor. brown hair and ginger beard is not a good look.
- the british winners were really letting the side down when it came to fashion. daniel day-lewis and tilda swinton both looked rough. but maybe that just proves that british actors rely on talent and not looks....
- josh lucas looks hot when he's not covered in blood and trying to kill jamie bell.

Ok. I thought I saw a clip of a giant eagle, but I couldn't remember what it was afterward.
Jon Stewart was joking around a lot- like playing Wii Tennis on the giant screen during a commercial break w/ the girl from one of the nominated songs, and also playing Lawrence of Arabia on an iPhone. I don't know if iTunes even has that movie for sale but anyway... it was still funny.

Does anybody know what music was playing during the 'Best Picture' montage? I was humming along with it, but I don't know/remember the name.

:D That's why taped shows are so handy to have.
^ I think the theme from "Dragonheart" was used at some point during the ceremony - I'm not sure where, but my brother recognised it so I don't know if that's the piece of music you're referring to.

Johnny's Fan wrote: As for Daniel Day Lewis [hiss]. I am a patriot, I love my country and my countries film industry, but that "knighthood" thing made me cringe and the whole speech made me want to strangle someone. Poor Johnny and Viggo. I so wanted either of them to win. Alas, why go for someone new and different when you can have a method actor who has won before. MontanaBohemian wrote: Johnny and/or Viggo deserved that Oscar SOOO much more than Daniel. I was talking with Eru after the show, and I told her that any man that gets tortured naked, and puts out a lit cigarette with his tongue should be given the gold statute. I also told her that I felt they overlooked Johnny's absolute best performance of his LIFE, maybe because of his past work (which has been all brilliant). Makes no sense to me why they wouldn't honour Johnny Depp SINGING. I completely understand the disappointment over Johnny Depp and Viggo Mortenson. They are two of my favourite actors and I would have LOVED to see them win. But I did see There Will Be Blood (I don't know if either of you did), and I loved it and I thought Daniel Day Lewis was remarkable. So I'm not upset about him winning. It was a fantastic performance which deserved the Oscar. And I have to mention that Johnny Depp is definately not the kind of actor who cares terribly much about some stupid statue that actually means nothing because it's completely biased. He has said that he doesn't believe in competition between actors. Not to mention he will without a doubt be nominated again and eventually win (though I personally believe that the Academy is unworthy of judging him ) Dark, Queen of Angmar wrote: I HATE Miley Cyrus.
Haha, meee too. WHY did she present? I don't understand. She has nothing to do with the Oscars!
Cate Blanchett looked gorgeous I absolutely loved the colour of her dress! Of course she always looks stunning and unique. She should have won Best Supporting Actress.
A lot of people seem angry about the Oscars this year, but I liked them. I've seen a lot of the nominated movies and I loved Jon Stewart.

First of all, Cate Blanchette looked SO unfairly lovely!
Ok Im done being fan-girl like. How unseemly of me... Gracious!
And Johnny and Viggo might have deserved some mention... But there were SO many good performances this year, tis hard to choose.
Miley Cyrus should just... ARGH! If I say something it will get ugly. I actually sat through one episode (I had to DARE myself, as punishment >.<) and I was blinking amazed at the level of pure, unadulterated stupidity and lack of moral dignity they achieve. Therefore, Saira never sit in front of the TV when Hanah Montana comes on. EVER. (She barely sits in front of the TV EVER anyways )
I agree with Her Highness the Queen JF-sie that there was something missing. I like last years better... Actually my favorite awards was when LotR bagged almost all xDD THAT was classic.

Most of the stuff on the Disney channel (the pre-teen/tween shows) are below intellectual par. Just the plot of Hannah Montana is dumb.
I steer clear of Disney channel unless they're showing a movie or something I like.
