I personally have no problem with the age of Anthony. He's just a sailor, not a captain or anything. True, but I just don't think his character was strong enough to really want to save Johanna, kidnap her, fight with anyone who tries to stop them, hold someone up with a gun, escape with her and take care of her. I think an older man, with a bit more...oomph... to him, would have made more sense. He looked like a frightened rabbit most of the time. Eä wrote: I'm considering seeing it again... actually it seems they show it in Spanish here and I feel strangely attracted to watching the movie in Spanish, but I don't think I can sit in for the whole movie without hearing the original angelic voices!
Nice long post Gimli, I actually did read it before but I was too caught up with other things to reply... I can only agree with what you said on the Johanna and Anthony part. I didn't like her voice either..
Angela who, you said... the theater play version is out there on YouTube? I'd love to see that. And also some of the songs they didn't include... I thought this was the entire musical version but now I think about it, it makes sense if there were more sub-plots and songs for the stage version. Ooh, no! Don't do it! It should be JD's voice and JD's alone!
Thank you, it's nice to know someone agrees with me.
You should definitely read about the stage play plot on Wiki. FRODOFAN wrote: I thought Johanna's voice was excellent. Very impressive and hard to hit those high high notes. Anthony, too, has a fantastic singing voice. Admittedly, she sounds better on the soundtrack, but it's too sickly sweet for me, and sometimes hurts my head. Yes, his voice was actually quite good.MontanaBohemian wrote: Eä wrote: Angela who, you said... the theater play version is out there on YouTube? I'd love to see that. Well, it's Angela Lansbury. And here's a link to her on YouTube singing "A Little Priest" : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYGHHxJnDIwMwa ha ha ha ha! My favourite part. XD I'm so morbid. I LOOOOOOOOOVE the soundtrack! Both the original and the film. I agree with Taur that Johnny has such a great voice. So much emotion, which is such a treat when it comes to musicals. But when it comes to this show, the ONE song that seems to ALWAYS get stuck in my head is "Johanna." I always find myself waltzing around the house singing, "JOOOOOOOOOHHHAAAAAANNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!" Yeah, I'm weird. But then I start singing "A Little Priest" as well. Which, garners a few weird looks.
I've seen that clip and frankly... it scared me. I dunno if I'd seen her on stage and the bloke who played ST whether I would have liked it or not... somehow I doubt it.
Johanna is one of my favourite songs. I think I love the music just as much as the actually singing. I love the "dum dum dum dur" that starts in the background when ST starts singing. That song makes me sad though when JD is singing it... so much emotion...
I've seen three Mrs. L's now and 3 ST's. The clip from the original ST doesn't really do anything for me, I'm afraid. I think Angela Lansbury's voice is to harsh and shrieky for my liking. I'm not really sure what to think of the guy who plays Sweeney. I have the 2005 Broadway Cast revival on CD - the cast all play their own musical instruments when they're not acting a scene - and I saw a clip of some of the songs on YouTube.... a bald Sweeney Todd and a modern day haircur for Mrs. L wasn't what I was ecpecting but have grown on me. Patti LuPone actually has a good voice - she was in the orignal version of Les Miserables, but she usually sings these massive pieces, so I get the impression she's being almost "contained" in ST. Some of the ways she pronounces words though... eh, it kinda ruins whatever she's singing for me.
Ok, that was me rambling... suffice to say my favourite actors for the roles are You-Know-Who.

Wiki.. check, I'll read up on the plot sometime, thanks for reminding me, Gimli!
I didn't say the stage version looked good... actually I didn't say anything about the stage version... because it didn't say anything to me... Stage and screen are very different medias and should remain that way, and I don't think I would go and see it on stage, but I difinitely need to see the movie again - Original version, of course!

I watched some of that clip you posted. I love Angela Lansbury, but I really can't see her as Mrs. Lovett...

Ha ha ha ha! Really?
I wonder if that's why the rest of my theatre troupe looked at me with such scared looks when I was so ... uhhhh ... enthralled during that part when we saw it.
I will agree, I don't particularly like the guy who originally played Sweeney. He kind of bothers me. Johnny's Sweeney has definately climbed the ranks to my #1 Sweeney. There's definatley something about any Sweeney really, singing "Johanna." Something so heartbreaking in his tone -- and Johnny's version...oh my god. Broke my heart.
I'll keep saying that this Anthony guy lost much of his and Johanna's storyline in the movie. Which is quite sad. Because it's quite romantic. And you definately believe his ability of rescuing Johanna a lot more. XD It's funny that you bring up thinking an older guy would've been better. Because the stage version I saw, was put on by a high school troupe. Mind you, it was one of about 5 troupes chosen from AROUND the world to perform on the main stage (which is like, highest honor) during the International Thespian Festival...ergo, uber professional.
I will agree that this actor looked like a scared rabbit. XD His eyes were really bizarre. Kind of bothered me.

I really enjoyed this film; I was pleasantly surprised by the singing by Johnny, Helena etc. - I honestly didn't think it would be up to much. Tim Burton of course working his usual magic - even managing humour (I couldn't stop laughing at Pirelli ) I can't stop listening to the soundtrack now - Johnny sings particularly well in "My Friends", I think - his deeper voice suits it well.
I would be interested to know more about the original story - even the first musical made out of it. Wonder if they differ much?

*wanders slowly in* Do I dare enter? All these ST fans are sort of... fightening... even now.
Johnny's Fan wrote: Without a doubt, what Mrs. L did to him was wrong, but I can't look at her and see her as a villainess like some people do, you know? She's a much more complicated character than she appears to be. Look at Toby for example. You could tell she loved that boy, and yet when it came between him and her Mr. Todd, she was prepared to give him up for Sweeney. It just shows how much she loved him, and what she was willing to do and in the end it was he that killed her, in a particularly horrible way (which I thought was too graphic personally, and the fact you could see her and here her... ). I have to feel sorry for her, just like I feel sorry for Sweeney (you know you shouldn't but you have to). The real villain of this was Judge Turpin and because of him Sweeney's life fell apart, and his wife's life was ruined, and his daughter suffered as well.
Sweeney Todd was very funny at times, I was laughing myself silly at some parts, but when it got nearer to the end, the tone of the film started to shift, and you kinda knew that it wasn't going to be funny anymore. I think it was the skill of Tim Burton that blended both the tragedy and the comedy together.
[BTW, if you want to talk about this more, we could move to the ST thread ]
eh, what's the worst that could happen, right? I could end up as a meat pie I guess... but whatever...
to continue what JF and I were talking about...
well, I agree with you on the way they got rid of Mrs. Lovett... even though I mostly just heard that part of the scene. I admit I had to look away by that point... I mean, you knew what was coming when they started to dance, you just knew it. And it was rather graphic (I peaked at it once )... but I thought some of the scenes where he slit the people’s throats were graphic so... I had to look away for most of them. The first guy he killed was the worst, I believe. I guess with the way she died I do feel bad for her... and I do realize there was more to her than just the villainess she appears to be on the outside, however, I still don't have to like her. (I admit her no fuss attitude was fun to watch though... she still lied and used however... ) and poor Toby... she would've killed him for Sweeney when he was so loving and loyal to her. that's sorta cruel, me thinkith. Aye, that's what I figured... ugh, evil judge!
Aye, Tim Burton's skill (and style) really showed through with this one... and the beginning did have light(er) parts. Like when Sweeney does his first shave and all that. When they first meet poor Toby... you know.

Okay, I did see this about a month ago, but I haven't had the time to sit down and write my opinion since. I saw it in a local theater about a week or two before the DVD came out. I really glad I did get to see in theaters because it's just so much more powerful on the big screen.
Anyway, I thought it was fantastic. Johnny did such an amazing job, winning people over to the serial killer's side while singing a difficult score. Helena, too, although I always imagined Mrs. Lovett to be a lot more... sort of perky. She still did a great job, because when I think about it living in the slums of 19th century London is not bound to make a woman perky. I don't think enough can be said for Tim Burton, and how he brought the whole movie together. There are so many ways one could go wrong in this movie, but he somehow knew what would work and what wouldn't and did everything right. It was funny when it needed to be, horrific when it needed to be, sad, beautiful... just great. I was totally unprepared for the blood, though! (It's one thing to hear "it's bloody," a completely different thing to see it!) I did actually watch it, though, and the first time around it was a bit distracting. Watching it the second and third time, you kind of get used to it. The burning alive didn't startle me as much. I guess I already had heard her screaming on the soundtrack to brace me for it, and I wasn't really thinking about how terrible it'd be to be burnt alive... by the man you love ... (oh shoot, now I'll never be able to watch that scene again!)
Anyway, I got the special edition DVD. The extras about the supposed real-life Sweeney Todd and the evolution of the story are sort of creepy, but quite interesting.

Yes, the first killing of Parelli is the worst. After that you are prepared for it. But like said above, the second time I watched it it didn't seem bad at all. With all the hype and different reviews I read before I saw it, I wasn't sure what to expect.
Anyway, I bought the special edition too, but haven't gotten around to watching the extra stuff. Can't wait though! I ordered it just a day or two after it was available.

I really wasn't bothered by the burning part. That was probably the least bothersome for me. I guess it didn't seem especially realistic to me (but how would I know what it would look like anyway?!) and it was the perfect powerful finish. Knew it was coming when they started dancing... I was thinking, "uh oh. Uh Oh. UH OH!" lol
