I'm not sure if we already have a thread about this, so forgive me Mods if we do....but has anyone seen the movie Amazing Grace? I just saw it today and it was amazing! The movie is about slavery in England, and this one guy who is a politician trying to stop it. It's based on a true story and on the song Amazing Grace. It's a terrific movie!

it comes out here tomorrow and i really want to see it, but our cinema's not showing it. i'll have to try and get to a decent cinema at some point.
this seems a good place to mention african snow. it's a new play by riding lights theatre company, also about the abolition of the slave trade, so covering the same ground as amazing grace but told from the point of view of john newton and ouladah equiano. you can find more about it at http://www.ridinglights.org/shows/africans_001.php. if you're anywhere near a performance, i strongly recommend you see it. obviously i haven't seen this show yet, but i have seen about 10 other shows by the company and they're all superb.

@Haldy: Yeah, he was in Titanic, King Arthur and the Fantastic 4 if you have ever seen any of those.

I saw it yesterday afternoon, unexpectedly, and I thought it was really good. England managed to abolish their slave trade a lot more smoothly than America, though the US Civil War is, in my opinion, an incredible time period.
I liked the fact that they managed to impress upon the viewer how horrible the slave trade was without showing really violent or disturbing images. It was more of an emotional movie as opposed to a visual one.
The costumes were also beautiful...from what I could tell it seemed to be pretty historically accurate.
I'd like to get the soundtrack, and perhaps buy the movie when it is released. But you know, when I left the theater I really started wondering about the modern slave trade. I don't know much about it, I just know it exists, mostly illegally of course. It might be worth researching, to see what I could do.

Has anyone read the Amazing Grace novel? I haven't read it, but I will read it after my dad finishes it...and when my sister's done with it for her research speech for school.
