Post subject: | DOCTOR WHO: the eleventh doctor |
so, the bbc have finally made the announcement. THE NEW DOCTOR WHO IS MATT SMITH. i’m sure that’s left you scratching your heads, as he’s a relative unknown and not one of the names touted by the press. he’s only 26, making him the youngest doctor yet, but he’s already won two laurence olivier awards (the most coveted awards in british theatre). as well as his theatre work, he co-starred with billie piper in ruby in the smoke and the shadow in the north, and played on the central characters in a tv series called party animals. i’ve only seen him in party animals, but i thought he was great in it – i developed rather a soft spot for him, to be honest. i think he could prove to be a very interesting doctor – being relatively unknown, nobody will know what to expect from him, so he’s free to do whatever he wants with the role. and no one wins two oliviers without being a damn good actor. anyway, here he is: ![]() ***i've posted the news here because some members of the doctor who fanclub don't want to know who the new doctor is, so i'd appreciate it if you could restrict all discussion of the news to this topic, save spoiling the next regeneration for anyone else. thanks.*** |

He was in the TV adaptation of The Ruby in the Smoke, wasn't he? I saw the second part (The Shadow in the North) though I can't quite remember him. I'm sure he'll be fantastic, though. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, i was quite shocked after watching that, it is indeed going to be interesting. He makes my wish of Noel Fielding being the 11th seem more plausible lol. i wonder what cap'n Jack'll make of him ![]() I reckon he's fit, in an emo-y way. |

As long as he isn't emo in the black-nail-polish-and-skinny-jeans sort of way. ![]() Ha, it was sort of hard finding him online since there's apparently (and yet not surprisingly) lots of people out there named Matt Smith. ![]() |

I kept calling him Matt Willis and wondering why I kept getting some guy from a boy band or something XD He seems very likeable though. Quite affable and fun. I tell you what, I can't wait for the regeneration scene ![]() |

i'm sorry i beat you to it, phoenix. i agree that he's very likeable (like i said, i really warmed to him in party animals) which i think is a really important quality for the doctor - the doctor is central to the whole programme, so if you don't like him, you're not going to like the show. i'm really glad they've cast a young actor. there are some incredibly talented young british actors around at the moment, and i'm glad they're giving another one some exposure. interestingly enough, most of them have come from a theatre background (as well as matt smith, there's ben whishaw, eddie redmayne, dominic cooper, james corden...). i think it's great that they're getting to showcase their talents on screen, as long as they don't abandon the theatre entirely. sorry, i digressed. i was really worried that they were going to make a truly terrible casting decision (there were several candidates who, if they'd been cast, would have made me stop watching) but i think this is a really intelligent piece of casting. i can't wait to get tennant out of the way now - i'm really excited! |

Nothing to be sorry about lol I was just too slow I think the decision to cast young was a very bold move. But I fully trust Stephen Moffat not to let us down, he knows what he's doing and I'm sure he's cast the right man for the job. I don't think there's many people that would make me tune out of watching. I'd at the least give them a chance to impress me. That all being said. I too am very excited about the future. I'll miss David. The same way I missed Chris and Tom and Peter and all the other Doctors I've watched before. But I'll move forward with Matt the same way I did with the others. |

i would certainly have given them a chance (curiosity would have got the better of me). i really meant that there were several actors (*cough*james nesbitt/patterson joseph/david walliams/bill nighy*cough*) who would have made me stop watching if they had played the role to the standard i expected them to. i've seen each of said actors in several things, and not liked them in anything. there are some actors i just cannot stomach. i would have gone into the series with an open mind though - i wasn't expecting much from catherine tate, but warmed to her by the end. |

Oh I get what you're saying totally. But for me the vital thing is if they entertain me as the Doctor. Catherine Tate is a great example, I really don't like her comedy sketch show at all and was very wary of her being cast because I didn't like her that much in The Runaway Bride, but in the series itself she absolutely blew me away and became one of my all time favourite companions. |

Oh, this is exciting! I only started watching Doctor Who last week- we're partway through the season with Christopher Eccleston- but the show is spiffy. I like Christopher's Doctor a lot and can't wait to see the others. |
