Does anyone have any thoughts on the nominations, who else should have been nominated, who should win, who will win etc. ?

I was going to start a thread like this one, but you beat me to it!

I'm more than a little disappointed in the Oscar noms this year (not that I usually agree with them, but still). It was a given that the obvious Academy-pleasers like Brokeback Mountain and Crash would get nominated, and other stuff seemed like it was nommed just for old-times' sake. What's with John Williams getting nominated <i>twice</i> (I think) for Original Score? And Munich, which no one really thought would get much Academy attention, seems like it got there just because it's Steven Spielberg. As a lot of you around here know, I couldn't stand Star Wars Episode III, but still, why didn't it get nominated for visual effects? Even I admit they were impressive. How could the Academy say that there were only three songs worthy of being nominated for Best Original Song? (Narnia should have gotten a nomination!) The only pleasant surprise for me was that Keira got nommed for P&P, but it's obvious that she's going to be beaten by Reese Witherspoon or Felicity Huffman (it just really, really bugs me when it's like the Academy decided they just had to come up with a few "extras" to fill all the spots, when the winner is already a shoe-in).



But, I'll still tune in to watch them Maybe Christian Bale will be there!

I've seen both Crash and Brokeback Mountain and I think they definitly deserve their nominations. I think Crash is the better film but I would imagine Brokeback Mountain will win it. Munich I havn't seen but I have read excellent reviews of it.

I agree about Star Wars 3 especially as they only have 3 noms in that category - surely it could have been there too. I thought the special effects in it were better than Narnia's.

I was very suprised that Keira was nominated. She was fine in P & P but in no way that special. I think they must have been really struggling to fill the category as Charlize Theron was also nominated and all the reviews I've read say that film's terrible.

I thought King Kong might have got more but I would imagine the acedemy feel it's too soon after ROTK to give PJ more noms.

Thanks for posting the list! I saw it a few days ago when I was reading the New York Times. It should be an interesting year to say the least. Some interesting nominations. I mean, Keira Knightly for her performance in Pride and Prejudice?! Come on! I know it might be the year of first timers, but seriously. P&P was good, but not that good. And her performance of Lizzy wasn't up to Oscar par. But that's my opinion, and I may be a little biased on the fact that I really don't like her as Lizzy. Ha ha ha. Now, the best actor I'm kind of torn. I'd love it if Heath won for Brokeback because he was EXCELLENT. But then there's Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and although I haven't seen Capote...I think he really deserves it.

As for supporting actor, I'm leaning towards Jake - of course.

Other than that, I'm rooting for Wallace and Gromit, King Kong, Harry Potter and Batman Begins.

I completely agree with Arwen. I haven't seen one movie nominated for Best Picture, and not that my views and opinions are the only ones that matter, but Brokeback Mountain is the only movie I have even heard of! (Though personally, I have no wish to see Brokeback Mountain)

And I agree that Kiera was a good surprise: even though I wasn't thrilled with P&P, she did a good job of acting. As Arwen also said, she's not famous enough to get the award, though.

I was surprised (in a bad way) that Narnia wasn't nominated for Best Song (I know Wunderkind is really popular). Am I right in saything that Star Wars wasn't nominated for anything?

I am highly disappointed in the nominations.

The idea of the Ocsars is not that the most popular movie/ actor etc. wins but the best movie. They don't always get that right but that's what they're trying to do. These are quite often the movies that not so many people have heard of as they aren't big blockbuster films which have lots of money to spend on advertising.

Yeah, like Elanor says, that's not the idea of the Oscars. It doesn't matter how many people have seen them, but the quality of the film. There may be a bias of their opinion but they all vote in a democratic way.

I'm glad that Star Wars was at least nominated for one Oscar. Personally, I think it should have at least been nominated for Best Score and maybe effects. Oh well. Go Wallace and Gromit!

Yeah of course they don't always get it right. In every oscar ceromy there's always winners and nominations that I don't think deserved to be there. I wouldn't say it's necessarly a high tendency but yes they often don't seem to give the award to the most deserving person/ film of that year and give awards to people because they were missed out the year before or because they've done at lot of great films that havn't been rewarded.

However I just think that comlaining about the nominations because you havn't heard of/ seen them is missing the point of the Oscars.

My comments seems to be miss-read.
My point in stating that I have never heard or seen some of the Oscar nominations is that they were not picked as well as they should've, in my opinion. Though popularity is not the point, good movies will recieve a large audience, therefore helping to determine the best movies of the year, for instace.

I did get that and that's what I was replying to in my first post. Good movies very often don't get a big audience and bad or average movies get large audiences because they are well advertised/ have famous actors in them/ are sequels/ are based on popular books etc. none of which makes a good movie. Look at the 10 top most grossing films for 2005: http://imdb.com/Sections/Years/2005/top-grossing
All of them were well advertised before they came out, most of them have big stars in them and so on. But I don't think that any of the 7 films I've seen on that list were particularly out standing or Oscar worthy though they were enjoyable.

Yay LWW (It should have been nominated for more!)! I really am not impressed by this year's noms either. I've only seen 6 of them (LWW, War Of The Worlds, Corpse Bride, HP, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Star Wars). Grizzly Man should have been nominated... Grr.
