I've just discovered these early 20th Century composers and I'm thrilled! I took out Holst's "Planets" on my cousin's recommendation and Williams' "Five Variants on Dives and Lazaras" and the "Synfonia Antartica." I love the romantic period of classical music, and this seems to be in the same boat. This is where movie soundtracks take inspiration!
So anyway. Go listen to Holst and Williams.

Kudos to Kitoky for the fabulous signature set, and art credit to engelszorn.

I love Holst's Planets! My personal favorite is Uranus, the Magician. I've heard of Ralph Vaughan Williams, but not much of his music yet, unfortunately. My favorite 20th century composer is definitely Aaron Copland, though. And Igor Stravinsky.

Oh, I'll definitely look those two up. I'm looking for more people like the two I mentioned.
My favorite planet is Neptune, the mystic...but I also think Saturn is loads of fun. Don't you think the beginning of Saturn sounds like a news theme, like would play as an intro to Brit Hume or some famous newscaster like that? *laughs*

I like the Planets...never really listened to Williams though! I'm more of a baroque lady myself. When it's baroque that you mostly listen to, anything else sounds...well...different.

I love Williams, can be hard to play. but the only planet I've heard is Jupiter... now I'm curious.

Telcontargirl, you should listen to all of the rest of Holst's Planets, but if you watch a lot of films (especially ones scored by Hans Zimmer), you should pay particular attention to "Mars," as it has been hugely inspirational to Zimmer over the years--starting with his soundtrack to Gladiator and then influencing others from there.

Vaughan Williams' "English Folk Song Suite" is one of my favorite pieces of all time.
