Ooo, Folk Music? I love it. I've seen Joan Baez live in concert.. which was totally amazing. I love her earlier stuff, when she covered an awful lot of Old English, and old American folk songs. It's nice that those songs haven't been forgotten.. although, not enough people know about them.
Scandinavian Folk Music, I don't know so much about, but I do love it...when I hear it.
There's a lot of new artists, these days, who are playing Folk Music.. hopefully it could turn into a full-blown revival, ne?

i don't know anything about scandinavian folk music, but i've been playing irish folk music for about 4 years now and i absolutely love it. some of the airs are heartbreakingly beautiful and the jigs and reels make me want to get up and dance.
i played a couple of gigs in ireland a few years ago with my old high school folk band, which was a pretty incredible experience. folk music seems to be in their very blood over there - they seem to play by instinct. so sad that we don't have that in england - we seem to have lost most of our folk culture here.

Now that I'm finally back in Sweden with access to my huge database of multimedia I could finally upload my favorite Swedish folk music tune;
"Högfjällspolskan" - Kalle Moraeus http://www.angelfire.com/folk/winterwonderland/Hogfjallspolskan.mp3
I love it so much Makes me want to dance and dance forever. 'Högfjäll' means Highland and 'polska' is a special type of Swedish folk dance/music

Nienor wrote: I went to a fabulous concert last night. Two families- a father and his sixteen year old son, and a father and his fourteen year old daughter, shipped over from Karelia in Russia and Finland to perform at a local university. Ever since I read about the Kalevala and my parents gave me a copy of the translated texts, I've been really interested in that area and their music and history. My music teacher, whom I am quite good friends with, once participated in a program that resulted in a handmade kantele; she showed me the instrument and it's a fascinating thing.
so you're interested in Finnish+Russian folk music? I'm finnish so if you want to know anything I can always find out. I always thought there are kantele- instruments all over the world but I do know that Väinämöinen in the Kalevala was the first one to play a kantele. so you've read the Kalevala? I used to browse it at my grandmothers, and I got really angry when the very old book got lost when grandma died. I would've wanted it. Isn't it so that Tolkien was interested in Kalevala?
and I could also help you with pronunciation if you want

Eru, I've finally got a chance to sit down and do a search for folk music! It's hard to avoid the stuff that was written in the sixties, based on folk music...not that that's bad stuff, it's just not what I'm looking for...but I'll see what I can do.
My favorite aspect of folk music might be the mountain dulcimer. It was especially used in Appalachia (the southern Appalachian mountains- I live on the other end, not far from the northern mountains), and is not dissimilar to the hammered dulcimer (my favorite instrument!). Another instrument might be pennywhistle or tin whistle.
A lot of songs were penned during various wars- you've no doubt heard Yankee Doodle, made up by the British to make fun of the Americans (who promptly adopted it as their own).
Here's some Mountain Dulcimer (it is, unfortunately, electric, but it still sounds cool!):

I'm afraid I haven't been able to find much more than that...I keep coming up with the modern stuff! If I do find more, however, I will post it for you to see.
