Yeah I would recomend it if you have the money. (the tunning DOES get annoying)
Really, I never herd about stringing the guitars that way! That's cool! I would think you could do the same thing with a mandolyn but having no idea how it is done coulnd't say for sure.
But if you get a good mandolyn ( I know a guy whohas a good one) It doens't even take a minute or more to tune so... (not sure how much he paid for it though)

Yesss!! Actually, is the mandolin I'm sure there's some banjo in there, but the "mad skills" you hear are the mandolin, hehe. Chris Thile, the mandolinist, is supposedly one of the best. If you buy a CD, you should buy their first, self-titled, one. The other two are good, but not as good. And the first is more bluegrass-y.

Has anyone been to a bluegrass festival before? There are several in Colorado every summer, and I'm hoping to go to one of the one's in August... the major one, the Telluride Bluegrass festival is next weekend, but I don't have the money, and its a several hour's drive away.

I don't know if you would consider it a purely "bluegrass festival" however every Sunday at a bar north of where I live, they have live bluegrass music and dancing...it's so cool, here's a picture!
I really liked the banjo player in this picture, he looked so...so...enthused! Sadly this is the only picture I've bothered to resize...also the only one that doesn't have people dancing really close! Hehe!

Alison Krauss is amazing...that one song, from Cold Mountain, never fails to get me a little teary (the closest any song can get me to crying). My dad listens to The Gourds, but I haven't really heard them, I should steal his CD.
There's this local...well, localish...band here called The String Cheese Incident, they're awesome, not strictly bluegrass but with a bluegrass flavor...

I've heard of String Cheese Incident, but I don't know if I've actually heard them. For some reason I'm thinking they're local to *me*... or maybe they just play here a lot.
//edit// I guess they are local! Boulder= local for me. *listens to them on myspace* If they are local for you too, then we must live close!
I'm telling you, all the greatest musicians come out of Boulder...

So String Cheese Incident is from Boulder? Ha! Well maybe when I said localish I meant in the Northwest area....I guess I just assumed they were from around here...Montana or maybe Washington...because they play around here quite a bit.

Well that's what their myspace says it makes sense... Boulder (and Colorado in general) is home of many a great folk/bluegrass artists... probably because Boulder is a magnet for artsy/nature-y people.

I've heard a lot of people say that Missoula is like the Boulder of Montana.
I'm actually listening to the String Cheese Incident right now!

Sadly, I haven't spent much time in Boulder, even though its only about 40 minutes away... what is wrong with me? Oh well, the downtown area of my town is pretty Boulder-ish.

I think they sometimes identify themselves as a bluegrass band, though, and they do play bluegrass on occasion. Lil' Jack Slade on their Home CD is definately a bluegrass song... Chris Thile, from Nickel Creek plays mandolin on that song

If you like bluegrass and Irish folk (which I do), then you'll like the Chieftains album: Further Down the Old Plank Road. It's an amazing blend of Irish and American folk...really good grassroots stuff...like Doc Watson (anyone heard of him?) and Nickel Creek also play/sing with the Chieftains.
One thing people don't get with me, is that I love folk in all it's forms--Irish/celtic, folk, folk-rock, bluegrass...but I really dislike country music. They are definately related, but not the same things! On the itunes store, they label Nickel Creek as country, and I thought to myself...no way are they country artists!!! Oh well...music categories mystify me anyway.

OOo! I own that cd by the Chieftains! It's good
I definitely agree with you about country music, it seems somewhat repetitious to me sometimes. However, I do like a few country songs...Ha, I remember travelling to Eastern Montana and trying to find a radio station and all they had was Country music....Oy!
