Gandalf is my favorite lotr character because he remindes me of Dumbledore who is better than any lotr character.

JK rowling did not build up half as much fear to the audience with Voldemort than Tolkien did with Sauron - then there is the fact that even the towering pillar of malice is servant to an even greater evil.

She tried and did fairly well but she lacked something that makes you fear Voldemort I found.

Now, now, people, we will not be bashing the Professor and his works, or JKR and her works.

I do not think either is better than the other as they both have their very different qualities. I think they are both just as powerful as the other, though they definitely do possess very different powers. For all we know JKR might have modeled Dumbledore after Gandalf, for all their differences they sure have a lot in common.

On the subject of Voldemort and Sauron I think again it is impossible to say one is better than the other or one is more evil. Again, they both have different qualities, but one is not any more evil than the other.

Sauron is the Prince of Demons...what is Voldemort???

Where does it say Sauron is the Prince of Demons??? I would have thought that would be Morgoth.

frankly, i'm not into HP at all, but i used to be, and dumbledore was my fav character, but ever since i met gandalf in LotR... well lets just say that now i think gandalf pwns dumbldore.

Morgoth is the 'Satan' figure in Tolkien's myth, the Lord of Evil, the King of Evil. Although its not stated why would Sauron not be the 'Prince of Demons' being second in command?

Well if you want to go into hierarchies and the like, yes, I suppose Sauron could be the Prince of Demons. But Tolkien never uses the word 'demon' in particular, does he? Or am I wrong? I don't think it's quite correct to describe Sauron as a demon.

True I cannot find a quote stating Sauron was a demon (though I have barely looked and one ot two probably exist - black demon rings a bell but I cannot find it), I have found a few quotes on Balrogs being named Demons (though there are dozens). As we know Sauron is of the same order of the Balrogs, it would be well to assume any of the fallen Ainur of the allegience of Morgoth to also be Demons, as we know Morgoth is the Satan of Tolkien's world.

Again I say that there is no way we can say one character is better than the other because of the many differences. Just because we deem one more power it does not mean it is that way. It can't be turned into a contest, it just wouldn't work.

If you just don't like HP then don't be posting here, and if you just don't like LotR then why did you join in the first place?

Sauron was a powerful Maia according to the Silmarillion under the Valar called "Aule" until he was corrupted by Melkor. When the Valar defeated Melkor and took him back in chains to Valinor, Sauron escaped and stepped into Melkor's shoes,becoming the second Dark Lord

Gandalf was also a Maia. While the Maia Sauron was known for his power and served Aule, the Maia Olorin or Gandalf was known for his wisdom and served Nienna. He was sent to Middle-Earth to combat Sauron.

Yes, like Dumbledore you could say he has the same father-like qualities. Like Dumbledore, his is old looking, grey, and very wise.

One small point: Gandalf did not serve Nienna, he was a Maiar of Manwe and Varda, yet he oft strayed into Nienna's land.

the two book series are very different,and prob should not be compared.as for vol watsit i thought he was based on crowley.if gandalf is based on anybody it prob is the oratorian father who was tolkiens almost adopted father.
