What is your favorite quote from the Hobbit? My favorite one off hand is Bilbo: But... Gandalf: No time for that. Bilbo: But...! Gandalf: No time for that either! And he ran out the door without his hat or his handkerchiefs! ![]() |

hehe, i like that one. also off-hand, i love the bit about the various meanings of "good morning". hang on a sec while i get my copy...ok, got it. it goes like this: bilbo: good morning gandalf: what do you mean? do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether i want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on? bilbo: all of them at once i love playing with words and this is a great example. tolkien also creates some wonderful new words like "confusticate" and "bebother", which i absolutely love. tolkien had a wicked sense of humour which really shines through in his children's literature. |

Yes! Confusticate and bebother! I love those words! I use them sometimes, and people give me funny looks. I know there are so many quotes from the Hobbit that I love, but the only one I can think of right now is when it's describing Bilbo and the Dwarves at the Lake Town, after he's ridden the barrels, and all he can say is "Thag you very buch" because he has such a bad cold. It's not that funny, but I laughed when i read it and I think it's cute. |

Oh, good thread, Leonder! eowyn of ilthilien, Ooh, that is a good one! ![]() Other than the quote that eowyn of ilthilien mentioned, my favorite Hobbit quote would have to be...(Bilbo) "I was having such a lovely dream," he grumbled, "all about a most gorgeous dinner." "Good Heavens! he has gone like Bombur," they said. "Don't tell us about dreams. Dream-dinners aren't any good, and we can't share them." "They are the best I am likely to get in this beastly place," he muttered, as he lay down beside the dwarves and tried to go back to sleep and find his dream. again. (laughs a little bit) I love that quote. ![]() |
