I wasn't sure were to put this but I thougt this could be the right place

Well, I've just read the story about Aldarion and Erendis...so sad. The ending was a little confusing though...a rough translation of it would be: And Erendis meet the sea in the year of ***(don't remember) Could it be that she walked into the sea and killed herself? And I just have to say that I think that Aldarion was really cruel to her, I sure if you have read it you'll know what I mean :disgust:

I thought this story was so very, very sad... but I think they were both at fault. Both could have been more understanding of the other... though to be honest, I identify more with Aldarion.

It was a little strange reading the story, and Erendis sometimes went by the name of Emerwen, which is what a very dear friend of mine goes by. But I like my friend better. :-P

I admit it, I don't remember this story. Which of Tolkien's works is it in? This is why I have to take notes...

It's in Unfinished Tales. :)

I took notes on that one!!! I'll have to read it again. This time with my trusty blue manuscript book and beautiful black pen and my side at all times!

I don't think 'cruel' is the write term to use for Aldarion's relationship with Erendis. I'd say 'cold' fits it better. She loved the land, he loved the sea, and he never could fully choose between the sea and Erendis.

I agree, cold would most defintiely fit the relationship.

Erendis was Aldorion's wife but the sea and Middle Earth was his mistresses. I interpreted the ending as she walked into the sea and drowned in a final showdown with the sea.

I thought the story of Aldarion and Erendis was really sad. I must say that I identify more with Erendis, but I think both of them could have been more understanding. I think Aldarion shouldn't have gona away that often, but Erendis should've understood his love for the sea a little bit better.
I interpret the ending that she drowned herself in the sea.

same here. i think she just walked off into the sea and drowned. i think they should have understood each other better. i mean, they were apart more than they were together. but i think it was both of their fault but i side with Aldarion. i mean erendis just stayed in the same place forever and she was stubbornand i thought her to be very annoying. that story was sad. :(

Yes, thats physically what happened, but Erendis had lost Aldarion to the sea, and metaphorically she went to "have it out" with her. ;)

I always thought she got the courage to sail, then she died at sea, but she would have been really old if she killed herself.

yeah I agree, their relationship is like many people's relationships today. But the difference is that they never officially split up or got divorced (which probably wasn't possible anyways, I guess).
Of course what you say about them being selfish and stubborn and not having enough understanding for each other is true. It was just too important for them to live their own lives the way they wanted to.
But of course the sea was the "cause" for their opposing opinions, because Aldarion loved the sea and Erendis wanted to stay in Numenor

Oh. Aldarion and Erendis..such a sad story. to be completely honest, I thought the real problem in their relationship wasn't the sea, the land, or whatever, but selfishness. Aldarion could have been way more understanding. He just didn't think their love was worth staying for...but Erendis was so stubborn..if you truly love someone, you try to understand them, make little sacrifices for them. Which is exactly what they both didn't want to do. Erendis loved the land, and maybe her own stubborness, more than she loved Aldarion, and Aldarion was too much of a free-spirit to be bound by the land...and didn't love Erendis enough to make staying on the land bearable.

I think their relationship is like many relationships today. The main cause of people breaking up is failing to understand the other, and just selfishness...only following your own passions without trying to understand the beauty of other interests.

I mean, just compare it to the story of Arwen and Aragorn; they are the opposite. Arwen must've longed for Valinor at times, for her family. But her love for Aragorn made staying bearable. Aragorn didn't want to be king and must've longed for the freedom he once had; but to be able to marry Arwen, he had to sacrifice that freedom. And he did. Because he was unselfish enough, and their love was strong enough.

Erendis and Aldarion remind me of many people I know, actually. Their tale seems so tragic etc, but actually, it's a really common tale. Without the drowning part, that is.

Well said! :-D

Okay, I agree with you on some of those points. I think that it was partly selfishness, but I don't think that they loved each other nearly as much as Arwen and Aragorn. Love isn't just a matter of feeling for each other and then making sacrifices for each other. Love is an emotion. Sacrifices would do nothing to further one person's love for another unless there is emotion involved. I think that love was lacking in Aldarion and Erendis' relationship, or at least wasn't very strong, so neither was willing to make sacrifices, to give up their other loves. It's been a while since I read the story, but that's my take on it.
