I'm reading the book and unil this moment I think it's interesting and explains many things from Lotr.So tell me,what do you think about it.

I love this book. It is tied with The Unfinished Tales as to which is my favorite of Tolkien's books, but it is still great. The tales of the Noldor and Edain in there are so interesting. And helpful. It cleared up a lot of confusing things in LotR.

This book is a masterpiece. It is some of the best writing you will find, and one of Tolkiens greatest achievements. I like the heroism, the times the book is set in are more heroic than the Hobbit or the lord of the rings I feel. And it links in with the Unfinished Tales very well as someone else said. I love the books of lost Tales as well.
This book is written to be like a history lesson for LOTR, but its far more interesting than a history lesson.Its just plain great.

The Silmarillion is an incredible book, one which you might have to read more than once to completely grasp everything (as I'm doing now). I definitely see why Tolkien considered it his greatest achievement. (though my friend called me insane for wanting to read about "history that isn't real history"... :annoyed2: )

I just got the Silmarillion today. It (finaly) came in the mail, and I can't wait to finish it!

I'll give you my consensus on the book when I finish it.

EDIT:
Okay, I've been reading it, and I've decided that it is a work of art. It is a truly amazing book that I won't mind reading again.

The Silmarillion is defenitely a masterpiece. The story is so huge and unbelievable - it's amazig that one person can innovate such a great thing like middle-earth, isn't it?

Definently a masterpiece. And Tolkien, I think, was very dissapointed not to have been able to complete it entirely. I think, after reading the Tolkien biography by Humphrey Carpetner, that it was the work Tolkien liked better than all his others.

Lúthien and Beren are even inspired by he and his wife. One day he and his wife went walking and she danced in the woods for him among the hemlock.

Of course, the tale of Beren and Lúthien is one of the best. But my other favorites are those of Túrin and of Ëarendil and Elwing.

I can only agree with what Frodo_Lives wrote. The Sil definitely is a masterpiece. If the Sil isn't a masterpiece, no book is. It's just amazing how one person was able to create something like it. So good on ya that you're reading it Elenthari :)

I can say that the book is MAGNIFICENT,INCREDIBLE,WONDERFUL!It's a masterpiece indeed.I read it some months ago and I was charmed!!I LOVE the book!!!

I think Tolkien put a lot of his own experiences, problems, likes, dislikes, desires and so on into the book. Still I can only agree with all of you. It is a great work of fiction.

The Silmarillion is my favourite book and considering Lord of the Rings has been voted best novel of all time and most fans actually prefer the Silmarillion I guess its the greatest book of all time also.
Providing you stick with it the first time, then do some research about the story online you will find the second read much more easy to understand and it becomes a book that you wish was a thousand pages longer.

Forgive me for laughing, but the reason he wasn't able to complete it entirely was that he died, so I can't imagine that he'd be disappointed--I'm sure that he has other things to think about now, as opposed to regretting the past.

It's really pity that Tolkien couldn't finish "The Silmarillion" and "Unfinished Tales".I really enjoyed reading them(though I can't say I understood everything at first.I hope I'll have time to read them once more this year).The way he described the History of Middle-earth is amazing.I mean everything is logical and it sounds real like the author was there and saw everything.It's so amazing!

yeah I can only agree. I wish Tolkien could've finished the Silmarillion and the Unfinished Tales.. I think he probably intended to change them quite a lot still.. but still everything sounds so real to me too and I don't find that in many books and I guess that's also a reason why I love it so much.
