You Have the Power To Change Anything In LOTR: If you had the power to change any aspect of Tolkein's writings, what would it be? I would consider the following: --More of Arwen. Frankly, the filmmakers were extremely on-target when they realized she is too important to have so little time on-stage. --More of Celeborn. He appears too briefly and what we see of him doesn't give the impression his life (as we know it from The Silmarillion) should, frankly. Think about it, what kind of guy would manage to snag the heart of Galadriel?!?! --Some genuine glimpse of Saruman the White when he was still a good guy. Short of some kind of prologue, don't know how that might be, but its something I'd like. --Theoden's sudden conversion by Gandalf always seemed far too sudden for me. --More about Legolas and Gimli, especially some more backstory about the former (a genuinely mysterious character when you really look at him). |

~ Less romance. Hehe, I hate romance. ~ More history on the characters... in my books I use flashbacks to reveal parts of the character's past. ~ More Eowyn! But I think they're good as they are, of course. |

Well, I certianly would put more story to Aragorn and Arwen. I also think that a little more desperation wouldn't hurt; it just makes the end more sweeter. Aside from these things, the only other thing I would propound upon is how this war effects all of Middle-earth and the races therein. We can see glimpses in the council of Elrond, and when Gandalf returns to Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas; but aside from these moments, I think that's it. That's all I would improve on....if it would work. |

Just more in general. More detail, more history, more languages. More stuff. I'm sure there was much more in Tolkien's head when he died, than what he committed to paper. (If I had to pick something especially, I'd want more on the battle of Dale during the War of the Ring. Dale and Erebor really interest me, and there is so little on that battle) |

I honestly don't know. The things I would have said had I been asked that question when I first finished the books are different to the things I'd say today. There were things that irritated me, things that mad me mad (and things that made my throw RotK against my mirror) but I wouldn't change them. They're part of LotR as I love it, and while I mightn't have written it that way had it been my story, I can see why Tolkien wrote what he wrote how he wrote it. I can understand why there are so few mentions of Arwen in FotR - it's Frodo's story, and to him she's not (as) important (as she is to Aragorn.) So for that story to be interwoven into the book wouldn't really work. But... I wouldn't mind if the tale of them in the appendix was longer. That'd be nice. ![]() Otherwise, a bit less of Treebeard talking (I fell asleep listening to that part on an audio book!) and more dialogue in general - it's the conversations that in many ways are my favourite parts - wouldn't hurt. I guess. Oh, and following on from Celebwen's mention of typos, I wouldn't mind if connexion was spelt connection, either... |

I think Tolkien did know what he wrote and what he was writing for. I think everything tolkien did was in he right way. I do no want to change some parts of tolkiens story. |

Absolutely anything? Oh my you may regret letting me answer this one. (laughs) Well, I would have written it in that Legolas had a small bit of a love story with some girl elf or... preferrabley Eowyn (not a story all about them in the Lord of the rings itself but just some small mention in those books), a bit more about the the Cotton family, a bit more background story to some of the characters (especialy Legolas, Merry, Pippin, ect), and an answer as to where/what happened to the ent wives. I mean no disrespect to the great JRR Tolkien though. Trust me I truely do love the the books and I understand why they were written the way they were written. That is just what I would have written had I written the story (which very lucky for and the rest of the world...I didn't ![]() ![]() |

I would like to hear more about the Entwives too- it's such a mysterious story. I'd really like to know how it ends. I'd like to know more in general about, well, everything! lol Some specifics, though- the Dwarves, Hobbits, the Barrow-wights, and Tom Bombadil. Oh, and Goldberry. |

I would have changed absolutely nothing. The book is perfect as it is. |

If I could change anything i would make it so that Tolkien lived longer to write more books and finish others. |

*nods* And so we can ask him all our hard questions about Middle-Earth. |
