Post subject:  Lord of the Rings - in different languages
I hope this is the right place for this thread, but if it isn't, mods: Please excuse me :blush:

What I thought was, that, since there are so many people from so many different places here, who have all read LotR, we could discuss basically the differences of LotR in other languages. If you have read more than one version, you could perhaps say what was good or bad, whether the translation was good or not.

I read it in English and German. In comparison I would say that the German version is in no way as accomplished as the English one.
Some names are changed but I just think the original version is best.

yeah I've also read the German and English version. There are two different German translations and I've read the one by Wolfgang Krege. I don't think it is as good as the English version either. The original version is just the best I guess.

i read it in english, and the french translation by Ledoux, and i noticed that Eomer is spelled "Eomer" and "Eomir" in the span of 2 pages... it was weird... :confused2:

I've only ever read it in English... I tried to look for a French version just for the hell of it, but I couldn't locate the French bookstore that I used to go to... :blink:

It's true that the french version does have many mistakes! But well I won't blame Ledoux, he's a second Tolkien to us, french fans, after all! :P

The worst one was probably in the prologue: Tolkien talks about the "departure" of Elrond and Galadriel if I remember well, and Ledoux simply translate it by "mort"="death"! :confused2:
The Immortal Lands' concept was obviously a bit hard to get! :duh:

I've only read the English version. I have seen Spanish versions of it but I will not try and read it though.

Well there are actually two German translations of LotR. I've just read the newer one, but I've heard that the older one is the much better translation and I believe that, because the translation I've read really is not that good

I've read LotR in Estonian and Russian(besides English, of course). I didn't like Estonian translation much, but Russian was kinda good. Nothing beats the original though...

I've read it in the Dutch language and English language... but there were difference... so I'd rather prefer the English one. because Tolkien write it in that language... so the most truly one :-D

I read it in Italian and in English. the italian translation wasn't that bad, they only changed too many names in my opinion...Rivendell became "Granburrone", the Shire became "la Contea"...but the translation is good...they used the right language to me..
