Post subject:  Miscellaneous Questions & Pondering
This is a topic for all of the questions and rabbit-trails that occur in other topics and are considered off-topic. There's no particular topic, but if someone brings in a random idea that they don't think needs its own thread, then it can be discussed here.

Mods, I don't know whether or not this would be considered worthy of locking, but if it is, I'll assume that such threads aren't for the posting, and I'll refrain from making similar ones.

At least for the start, there's a point Aerlinniel brought up in a different thread about Men, and their history before Tolkien brings them in.

I'm inclined to believe that they lived in various nomadic tribes (though they possessed at least a fair knowledge of 'modern' weapons by the time they crossed the Ered Luin into Beleriand), warring with each other sporadically, though they fell one by one (minus the three houses of the Edain) under Morgoth's sway.

Lol, Aerlinniel. That might be best. :P

So Morgoth's darkness descended upon men, and in the Shadow they did some great evil. Interesting.

I wish now that Tolkien had wrapped that up as well....but not as much as I want to know more about the Vanyar. They are (I think) the race of Elves that we know the least about, except, perhaps, for the Laiquendi.

I'd really like to know about the Vanyar as well. After all their king Ingwe was considered king of all the elves even though he stayed in Valinor all the time and had nothing to do with the elves of middle-earth. I wonder what their life in Valinor was like and how they changed over the years or if they changed at all.

It's just a thought, but I'd guess that the Vanyar were, perhaps (in the end) the wisest and fairest of all of the Elves, spending so much time with the Valar as they did--specifically, with Manwë and Varda.

well yeah. I also guess, they must've been the fairest and wisest elves. I bet they learnt a lot from the Valar. But they never made the same experiences as the Teleri or especially the Noldor and I'm sure those experinces made the Noldor (e.g. Galadriel) very wise, too.

Definitely. The Vanyar would have been 'wise', but the Noldor would have been 'worldly-wise", if you get what I'm meaning.

The Vanyar would've gained wisdom through studying and long talks and deep thinking, whereas the Teleri and Noldor had it thrust upon them, along with mistrust and stuff.

Spear Elves--interesting. I wonder why they're called that.

Were the three races of Valinorean Elves associated with different weapons? :blink:

The Noldor, definitely, IMHO. After all, they had Finrod, Aegnor, Fingon, Fingolfin, and all of those great princes among their ranks. :)

The Teleri and Nandor are cool as well, though.

Which book was that from, btw?

I just like all of the children of Finarfin. And Fingolfin. :P

My favourites are the Noldor, too. As you said, Finrod was a Noldo and he is my favourite character in the Sil hehe I love him ;)
But I also like all the other elves a lot. They've all got something special about them, like e.g. the Teleri the love for the sea which I really like.
But all in all the Noldor are my favourites :)

Yeah, it really is a hard choice. And tbh, the Sindarin/Teleri come in at a close second to the Noldor, because of Thingol, Beleg, and Mablung. :D

It made me so incredibly angry at the Dwarves of Nogrod when they sacked Menegroth and killed Mablung and Thingol.

oh yeah, definitely, cuz I quite like the Sindar too, especially Mablung. I think he's such a brave captain and then dwarves came and killed him Thingol and sacked Menegroth. I was quite upset about this.

wow you've read the Sil when you were only 12?? You must be very smart then. I first read it when I was 14 or 15 I think and I didn't really understand it at first since there was so much information in it.
That part when Thingol was killed didn't stop me from keeping on reading the Sil but I just found it very sad and it was something the dwarves shouldn't have done.

I read The Silmarillion for the first time in 2002, which would've been when I was twelve or thirteen.

For a little while it was my favourite book, mostly because of the 'supporting' characters like Finrod, Glorfindel, Ecthelion, and Mablung. :P

Lúthien=Awesomness, but not as awesome as Beren, Tuor, and Finrod. :P

Mablung, Ecthelion, Fingon, and Fingolfin come in after her. :D

And no worries, Aerlinn--I already knew that I had a weird personality. :)

haha.. some people say all LotR addicts are weird..
well my fav character is of course Finrod :) but I also like Glorfindel, Mablung, Tuor and Galadriel a LOT.
