Hey, my writting instructor is always telling me to read more! READ READ READ!! Since I write fantasy type stuff I figured LOTR would be a good group of book sto read since I have not done that yet... (I don't read much.... at all) But I was wondering is the simarilion neccesary to read to understand some things in the books or is it just kin dof a little side issue of it's own? |

Well you obviously don't have to read it to understand most things in LotR... I'm pretty sure you understand it all now, and you haven't read the Silmarillion ![]() But if you'd like to dig deeper of course, you really should read it. It's one of many history books for Middle-earth and I highly recommend it. I mean, it'll help you understand more about LotR of course and more clearly, because you'll be able to connect things and understand how certain things and people in the book work, why they're like that and why they're important. Sorry my brain's been fried by the sun so I'm not making too much sense... hope you understand though ![]() |

lol no it makes sense ![]() So would you suggest that, if I was going to read it, that I should read it before reading the other books or after? (don't even know why it matters... just thought it might) |

I'd suggest that you read the Sil before reading the Unfinished Tales or the History of Middle Earth Series, because without reading the Sil I believe it would be hard to understand the books. Of course you don't have to read the Sil to understand LotR and yes, it's quite hard to read, especially in the beginning, but it's definitely worth reading if you want to "dig deeper" as Haldir said, it's always the first thing to read |

Ok thanks. ![]() Since I am not such an avid reader I will probably start with the Felowship, then TT and ROTK Then I'll look into silmarilion and maybe the history of middle eartha nd all that other stuff. (depending on what my brain feels like after reading the first three books... reading taxes my systems lol) |

lol well I am sure that the history and everything will really be taxing on me since I am not such an avid reader. lol So if I read them I will be sure to read the silmarilion first. |

I bought the UT before I bought/read the Sil and I tried to read the story of Tuor and I just understood NOTHING. I only thought like what are they talking about??!! So I quickly went and bought the Sil |
