Yes, you should DEFINATELY read it. It's great. It has soooo many fantastic stories in it. I'll warn you that it is more confusing than LotR because of all the different names and everything, but it's one of my favorite books. It also really gives you a lot of background for LotR, like where Sauron started out and stuff. EVERY LotR fan should read it!!

I personally like it better than Lord of the Rings. I enjoy the sort of biblical language, though. Lord of the Rings can put me to sleep at times. The Sil can too, but to me it's just so much more interesting, because what you're reading has so much backup to it and effects the LOTR universe so much.

You should read it! It's very confusing sometimes, but it's worth it.

It is a fabulous book - I love it even more than LotR, which is saying a lot.

Yeah, it helps a ton.

Much was made clear after I read that book....especially the whole deal with Earendil. The Silmarillion really explains a lot about him.

I agree with them. If you liked LOTR a lot, then don't think twice. You may find it confused sometimes (I had lots of troubles with so many names) but it's an amazing book. And two years later from my first reading, I read it again and it was even better because the confusion with the name was gone and I could understand and enjoy the stories even more.
:)

I wouldn't recommend Silmarillion to everyone-- I think you'll only be able to get into it if you like LotR enough to want to know all about the background of the story.

I do. I love the Silmarillion. But the style is vastly different from LotR, so be warned.
