I know nothing of him. So if you know please tell me how he is becoming so powerful and destroyed by whom and where. Whatever you know about him.

He was the greatest of the Ainur and he was created by Iluvatar. He was the most powerful of the Valar, but then he became evil... finally he was banned from the world by the Valar who defeated him in a great battle

After his theft of the Silmarils and Darkening of Valinor, Morgoth fled the Valar, and returned to Middle-earth with Ungoliant before the beginning of the First Age. In his ancient fortress of Angband, far to the north of Beleriand, he made an Iron Crown for himself, with the Silmarils mounted upon it.

In the first year of the First Age, the Noldor returned to Middle-earth to make war on Morgoth for the recovery of the Silmarils. The history of that Age is the history of the hopeless wars of the Noldor against Morgoth.

Feanor was the one who gave Melkor the name Morgoth (Bauglir). Sauron was one of the Maiar and he became Morgoth's most powerful servant. He survived the great battle between the Valar and Morgoth. Morgoth became different from the other Valar quite early, when they were playing the music of the Ainur he always played different tones that didn't fit to the melody.

Perhaps he is unknown because Tolkien meant him to be. There is much strength in concealment.

Melkor was indeed the greatest in might of all the Ainur. It was he who was going of alone into the void to seek the flame imperishable, yet did not find it (since it is with Illuvatar). Then when the great music was made, Melkor started to make his own tunes so that a discord arouse around him. Soon he had many followers and two musics were progressing next to each other. After that Eru showed them what they had created with there music, namely Middle-Earth. And Eru made it into being, Ea, the world that is. the Ainur that descended down into it were called the powers, the Valar. Of which Melkor was one, the mightiest. Soon Melkor wanted to be lord of arda and strive came between Melkor and the other Valar. A lot of things happened from then... places were made and Melkor destroyed them, lamps were made to lighten the earth and Melkor crashed them, Melkor was finally chained and put three ages in the dark. After that he was released again but evil had not left him... then he destroyed (together with Ungolhiant) the trees of the Valar. But this is already said above.

In the end he is banished from earth and locked in the void beyond the halls of Mandos, where he must wait untill the end of time.

Well I guess he became so poweful because of lust and envy... you know, the other Valar did perfect things, were loved [by animals, there were no people yet methinks :P].. he had naught of it, so yeah, he wanted to revenge --- bit cheesy but just MHO :-D

I don't think it was mentioned, that, Morgoth shall eventually break through the Doors of Night and destroy the Sun and Moon. And a great battle shall ensue(Dagor Dagorath [sp?]), which all the free races of the Worldshall partake in. In the end it shall be Turin Turambar who shall deal the final blow to Morgoth. Then shall the World be made anew, a world that knows no darkness or evil.

I think he became so power-hungry because he wished to be worshipped as Iluvatar by Elves and Men. He failed at that. Like most other things.

Morgoth [also known as Melkor] used to be one of the Valar. He was the only one that differed in opinion and judgement of Middle-Earth, so Iluvatar sent him away. While the other Valar were making M-E a beautiful place Morgoth was creating and sending terrible beasts and monsters into the land.

I do believe he was also the one to steal the Silmarils and set them in a crown.

The following is my account of Melkor:

Originally he was called 'Melko' and he was greatest in Might over all of the other Ainur - In fact greatest of all beings save Eru alone. He is Satan of Tolkien's world, he was created by God, like Satan, and was the ultimate rebel of God, like Satan.

Melko new of his Power, and although he was not at the very, very beginning evil, he did possess some thoughts which were not present in the other Ainur. The most prominant of these was greed. Melko sought ever for the Flame Imperishable in the Void - that is the object that gives life - but he never found it for it lies with Eru.
During his travels alone in The Void looking for the Flame he began to devise thoughts of his own. He wanted to be called 'Lord' and to be master of other wills. Therefore this discontent was brought forth in his music which he sang before the other Ainur. This is called Melko's discord which Challenges Eru's themes and disheartens most other Ainur.
See the Silmarillion for more info on the discord of Melko.

Anyhow when Ea (The world) was created Melko saw this as a kingdom for himself. However the other Valar and especially Manwe, the Lord of the Valar (Valar means the great ones of the Ainur) would not permit Melko to have the world as his kingdom. So Melko fled north to the Iron mountains and conceiled his dark thought. He now named himself 'Melkor' - He who descends in Might, Lord of all, for he was the first of all the Ainur to descend into Ea.

Anyway during this time the Valar created many fair things and Melkor destroyed them. He was not alone however. During his splendour and power in the Void, he managed to corrupt some other Ainur to his service. Of these is Sauron, who originally served Aule of the Valar, and he was Melkor's most trusted servant.
Others include the Valaruakar - the balrogs and at most there were 3-7 of these.
Another is thought to be Ungoliant, who's origin is unknown.

Now Eru sent one last spirit down into the World, and his name was Tulkas, who managed to drive Melkor out to the outer Darkness.

So the Valar managed to build many fair things, the greatest of which was the two pillars of Light - Illuin and Ormal - the highest mountains ever in Arda, or ever to be, and they were made by Aule as all mountains are, and they had lights on top which were given by Varda.

However when the Valar were wearied after building there creations Melkor saw his chance and re-entered Arda and destroyed the Pillars of Light. With there downfall the world split into three - Valinor in the far west, Middle-earth in the middle and the Lands of sun in the East.

Melkor fled back to the far north and built his worst fortress which was Utumno. He also built Angband and Thangorodrim in the northwest to guard Utumno from the Valar. Sauron was put in charge of Angband. Gothmog - the Lord of Balrogs, was in charge of Melkor's forces.

Then is the comng of the Elves in the East of Middle-earth. It is thought that Melkor caught some of these and tortured them into the Orcs, but this is uncertain.

The Valar then decided to rescue the Elves that were not in Melkor's control and Oromeof the Valar brought alot to Valinor, though ome stayed behind and are lost, whilst others did not go the full distance with Orome to Valinor.

The Valar then make the War of Powers against Melkor, the second great War and Melkor is led captive to Valinor and Utumno is destroyed. Melkor is then locked awayfor very long until he is brought before the Ring of Doom council again and he is given freedom, providing he stays in Valinor.

Melkor however manages to spread many lies amoungst the Elves of Valinor and causes discord, such as there was not before.

Melkor then goes to the south of Valinor, far away from the Valar's strongholds, for they were ever vigilent towards the North and Melkor seeks a being that was once in his service. He found Ungoliant in a montrous spider form and gains her alliegence.

Whilst all the inhabitants of Valinor are at festival on Taniquetil mountain - the Mountain of Manwe, Melkor smites the Two trees of Light, created by Yavanna of the Valar, fairest of all things in the World. Valinor is covered in Darkness and Melkor goes to the house of Feanor and slays Finwe (Feanor's father - the King of the Noldor (a major group of Elves) and Melkor steals the Silmarils - the three jewels of Feanor which contain the light of the Two trees. Then Melkor flees North back over to Middle-earth to his ruined Fortress with Ungoliant. Ungoliant then later tries to wrest Melkor of the Silmarils but Melkor's Balrogs come and she is forced to flee. Then Melkor rebuilds his strongholds (except Utumno).

Feanor then names Melkor, Morgoth - the Black foe of the World.

Then comes the Wars of the Jewels.

Melkor ends with the War of Wrath (The third great war) in which he is cast through the Door of Night, which leads to the Void. Sauron however along with a few Dragons, many Orcs, Wargs and trolls, Shelob, ancestor of Ungoliant, and only one known Balrog flee across Middle-earth at the fall of the Valar.

Then comes the Ages where Sauron is the Dark lord, and he is deafeated in the second and third ages. Then there is peace for many thousands of years, until at last the Elves and Valar grow weary of the World, in which they can never leave until the world is destroyed, and they begin to envy men who once dead go back to Eru and get to leave the world. Then Melkor sees his chance and re-enter Arda and wages the mightiest War Ever - the Dagor Dagorath. Melkor summuns all his foul servants back and the wage war on the plains of Valinor. Sauron is then slayed by Olorin, whilst morgoth is slayed by Turin turumbar. Thus comes the end of the World, in which the world itself is destroyed and rebuilt by Aule and the Dwarves. This is called the Second great theme in which would come the dominion of men.

You really need to read the Silmarillion if you want a far better account of all this.
