I would really, really love it if PJ directed it. That way it would have the same feel to it as LotR, making the whole thing seem more complete. It's sad that they lost their director though-- that's just going to slow things down even more.

Woah woah woah. Hmm. Seems like he's sort of taking the easy way out. If he wanted to make these movies that badly he would have stuck around. I mean really, what if PJ, Fran, Phillipa and all of the others didn't want to make LotR that badly? For one thing, none of us probably wouldn't be here today. And I do understand that were scheduling conflicts and staying there for 6 years is a very long time.
I don't really know of anyone who could direct them now... maybe PJ will step up? That would make me ridiculously happy.

The movies don't have a green light yet anyway... so having to get a new director won't slow things down as much as if the director quit in the middle of the filming process. That said... PJ should totally direct!

I think the thing with Del Toro is, this is not his baby. LOTR was PJ's baby, he slaved over it, he pitched it to studios, he was there trying to get it all together and he spent the best part of 7 years working on it.
Del Toro has been hired to be the director. While he has a lot of input into things obviously, it's still not his life and his dream to get The Hobbit off the ground.
He already has about 5 films in the pipeline. He didn't sign on to be making a film for 5 years. We've been hearing for 12 months now all about the different stages this film is in, and each time we are told something different.
Want to know why we never got the Christmas present in 2008 which was announcing who The Hobbit would be? Because they didn't bloody know themselves.
I think there have been more ups and downs and promises broken regarding The Hobbit then we're being told.
And it's a real shame, because you would think after LOTR and what they managed to achive, production for The Hobbit would be swifter and smoother. But of course, big studios want in and that is where the problems start. If MGM hadn't gone bankrupt and all the problems with getting the rights, we might have been enjoying The Hobbit in less than 2 years time.
As it is now, I hope Ian McKellen hasn't spent too much renting a house in NZ, as I don't think he'll be doing any acting in the next couple of months.

I want PJ, but I thought PJ wasn't able to act because of something to due with finances in FotR.

This is the final straw. Why can't MGM get their act together? Sell the rights! No more extensions on your debts-- sell to Time-Warner! You're a broken company anyway! Sell, sell, sell! I want my Hobbit!

Sorry, but this really upsets me! I fear the creative conflict of having had two directors. Even without any filming done, del Toro has poured a lot of his own unique vision in this project. From what I hear, most of the creatures and sets have been designed under his supervision, and I'm afraid a new director won't know how to use them and film them to the best effect, and introduce new and different conceptions that may clash with del Toro's.
I apologize if I sound as if I think the movie is ruined, but I kind of do, at the moment! I'm sure I'll feel better when the shock of the news is past, but... wow, this is definitely not good news!
I would feel better if PJ were directing, but, like Smeag mentioned, didn't the lawsuit forbid it?

To be honest, I don't think PJ is allowed to step in after the issues he had with New Line. I'm not really sure what all went on, but I'm positive there are some legal issues afoot. I have to say, I'm really disappointed about del Toro though. I had high hopes for him.

^ I'm not sure about that anymore. PJ has been talking to the NZ newspapers and he says he may have to juggle more than one film project but if that is what it's going to take to get The Hobbit made, he will do that.
No mention of any legal entanglements with New Line, just possible difficulties with studios he is contracted to work for.

I thought the trouble with New Line was between them and the Tolkien family. I know PJ was involved, but I didn't think it was in a terribly direct way. I could be very wrong(easily). Maybe I'll go look what happened up and try to figure this out.
Anywho, if PJ can direct I am all for it. I want the movie to be made and made right. I just wonder if I'll have my master's degree from college by the time it comes out.

All right, I've done some snooping around online and here's what I've found. There was some bad blood between New Line and PJ right after RotK came out. New Line's head, Robert Shaye, was quoted as saying that Jackson "will never make any movie with New Line again while I'm at this company". This was due to a legal dispute between New Line Cinema and PJ's company Wingnut Films. Since then, Shaye has made efforts to repair his working relationship with Peter Jackson, and MGM [which owns the rights to The Hobbit] has said "we still believe this matter of Peter Jackson directing The Hobbit is far from closed".
I'm hopeful.

That's about what I have been finding too. I'm hopeful too!! PJ started this LOTR madness! I hope he'll continue it!

Neill Blomkamp is a serious rumour/contender for the directors chair. If you're not familiar with his work, he was behind the amazing District 9.
If true...I'm sold.

^ I agree, and since PJ worked with him closely on District 9, they already have a working relationship. I would totally be okay with that if Neill decided to direct, I loved District 9.
