When I saw the film twice I was still trying to wonder what he was riding, it was most defiantly not a horse!!

It's the largest type of deer in the world. Looks very much like a moose. If you google elk, you'll find all the information you could possibly want, and then some

It's an Elk in my opinion, but there's a huge fight debate that it could be a moose instead. It's definitely an elk

Haha I think it's awesome, whether its a moose or an elk, but I personally like the idea that its a Megaloceros http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaloceros which is a HUGE prehistoric deer, just because its cooler

But they're kind of halfway between moose and elk, so I guess that means that everyone's a tiny bit right?

There are elk in Middle-Earth?!?! Well okay, but whaaat?? I would like to know who thought up that idea... I agree, the Megaloceros idea is definitely more appealing.

Thranduil seems so mean and with no feelings in the movie... I thought of him as a much better person, like Legolas.

Well for one thing we don't see much of Thranduil in part 1... we'll probably get a better sense of him as a character in the second movie. Also, we have to take into account that the dwarves are pretty biased against the elves. But in the movie it definitely seemed like he came late to the battle on purpose.

I got the impression that Thranduil was in the prologue to set up some of the antagonism between the elves and the dwarves, I suppose it gives us an explanation of why they don't trust each other without having to go through the backstory in the Silmarillion. I agree it seemed kinda odd to march your whole army to Erebor to turn them around, but there was no way that the elves could have defeated Smaug either.
I've always thought of Thranduil as a darker character than Legolas-in the books he had to suffer loosing his father and most of his people at the last alliance, then have to live with Sauron invading and corruptting his home too. Legolas is pretty carefree in comparison!

I don't think he arrived late on purpose, it must have taken some time to gather his army and march from Mirkwood to the Lonely Mountain. Also, given the way Thror treated Thranduil after he found the Arkenstone, which was not very respectful, it came as no surprise that Thranduil doesn't exactly have warm feelings towards the Dwarves. But I agree with you Lembas, book-Thranduil also didn't seem like a jolly character. I'm very curious to see how he will be portrayed in the next movie, especially compared to Elrond who always seems peaceful and forgiving. From what we know from the book, Thranduil is not as mild as some of the other Elf lords.
