Has any one ever noticed how weak the chain that the ring is on is? I mean, it constantly comes off and with a small tug Frodo can snap the chain. Surely for something so precious you would want a decent chain so he didn't lose it and be unable to find it again? Thoughts and comments! |

Hobbits aren't exactly known for their chain making skills...or maybe the chief jeweler was on vacation? ![]() But, in all seriousness, I completely agree! If it were me, I would snap that chain in no time! |

I just think it's funny how it's randomly on a chain then the next moment it's not then it's hooked to the chain again. |

Does anyone know where he got the chain? I don't recall him having it before Rivendell... |

Lol, the Hobbits didn't make the chain. You are right ElfQueen4, he didn't have it before Rivendell. I have noticed the chain is indeed weak when the movie script calls for it, but in times of serious peril it seems to stay pretty well in tact. ![]() It seems to be a thing for all movies to make necklace chains really breakable. I'm not sure why though... |

Maybe if it was made by the Elves it is weak when it has to be weak and strong when it has to be strong. A little like the Elven rope, you know. |

Yes, it's an elven chain that is magic, like the rope. It comes apart at the wearer's will, but then magically mends itself at need so it can be worn again. (Kind of like the chain thing in Stardust) Well, I can't say for certain, don't listen to me. But that's the only explanation I can think of. |

Yeah, I yell at the TV a lot when I'm watching it cause that happens. It would make sense about the elvish magic, buts irritating that it has to be tuned in to Frodo's corrupted will instead of just doing the right thing. |

I have wondered about that - but maybe it's got something to do with the Will of the Ring and all that. Like, the Ring has a mind of it's own, so maybe it wants to fall off the chain? Not sure that makes sense, but it's a sort of theory of mine. |

Just checked "Fellowship" the book, chapter "Many Meetings". The new chain that Frodo finds he has been given to keep the Ring on, around his neck, is described as "light, but strong". So though it is not stated (there) explicitly, I would guess it to be made of Mithril. That would not break; things of Mithril are made by the Dwarves. But in the movie, PJ just has it "perform" as his script needs it to. In the EE of one of "The Hobbit" movies, he confesses that he is not big on consistency ... I would never have guessed! ![]() |

Maybe... the Will of the Ring had corrupted one of the chainlinks to come open at precisely the moment the Ring wanted it to? ![]() |
