Did anyone else notice in the scene where the Fellowship is in the boats traveling down the river and it switchs from them to the urukhai running through the trees and Legolas turns and looks at the toward the trees as if he might see something? Can Legolas actaully see that far? And if he can why didn't he tell the Fellowship about the uruks? I know he mentioned that there was a shadow growing in his mind but is he just hinting that he saw urukhai or is he hinting that something bad may happen?

I think that it was more that he sensed something, and when he said that a shadow was growing in his mind he was referring to this feeling of danger that he had had at that moment and that probably hadn't gone away. I'm not sure but that's the impression I got.

Maybe he can see that far. I think it mentions how far in FotR or TTT, but I can't seem to remember. Thats really confusing, becuase if he can see that far why does what he says make it seem like he can't see that far and he just has a sense of foreboding.

I always thought that he had heard something, or his sense of forboding. I don't know if he would've been able to see through the trees very well.

I listened to the Director/Writer commentary track and Peter mentioned something about that he just wanted Legolas to sort of sense that danger was approaching, not actually seeing anything but just feel that there was something out there.

Yes, that's exactely what I think!
'The Great River' is one of my favourite parts in FotR. You can just feel danger approaching. The music is also great. You can hear the 'mortality', if you can see what I mean.

^I know exactly what you mean Cuilwen!! I love the music too, and the way everyone kind of seems on edge makes it really seem like danger is coming.

Btw, good theory Erullissë. So, it really doesn't matter if he could see that far or not. The scene wasn't used for that purpose.

I agree..I thought it was just like he and Lurtz sensed each other, rather than he actually seeing him, because then he would have done something about it..

And anyone notice how Legolas always warns the Fellowship of danger, they ignore him and then the Fellowship gets attacked.. :confused2: moral:..don't ignore the pretty blonde :-D

Lurtz and Legolas sensing eachother's precense. I've never thought about that.

Yes, the moral is definantly, do not ignore the pretty blonde. :bounce: Tehe...

im pretty sure that Legolas can sense evil things drawing near, like in ROTK when he is at Edoras and he can sense things happening in Mordor.
but Legolas does have pretty darn good eyesight.

yes, I totally agree :)
I think he sensed only that there was something evil out there, not what in fact, but that there was a shadow growing his mind. like he said.

Yeah.. I think elves (and maybe some others who are classified as "good") can sense something evil approaching. Its like intuition or something.

In the TTT movie, at the beguinning, Aragrn says to Legolas, "Legolas, what do your elven eyes see?"

Yeah, because there's a big swarm of something black flying towards them. He instantly saw what it was and they took cover. So, of course that means he can see far. :)
