True, true....I love those subtle nuances in the movies that can have stories behind them...

I'm a bit confused, because I don't ever remember Grima crying [even just a tear] in the movie. Yes, I remember this particular part, but not the tearing up bit.
And if he did cry a bit, I've an idea as to why - Of course, he is horrified at what is going on because I think he finally realises that he's in over his head. As for crying, I think he had something going on with Eowyn. Not on her side of course, but I do think he loved her or lusted after her to an extent. Maybe he's realised that she's in danger.

Oh! I never considered that he might be sad! I just thought he was crying because it was just a MASSIVE army-- you know, how people cry at weddings? "It's so beautiful!"
I think feeling remorse is a much better idea!

Guess he must have really regretted switching sides.

I think that there are two possible explanations for Gríma crying(for me at least...): A) Because he was just overwhelmed by the power of Saruman and that he was actually capable of building an army to destroy an entire race. He was just so impressed by this huge army and the cruelty that he cried out of fascination, happiness, amazement, whatever. or B) Because in that moment he realized what he had actually done. He had betrayed his own homeland, the people who he had once claimed to love, who had trusted him. He was actually responsible for destroying this country and its people. It was him, who helped Saruman poison Théoden's mind, him, who told him they were fleeing to Helm's Deep, him, who told him where Helm's Deep only weakness was. Probably in that moment he suddenly realised what he had done and felt regret and probably it was actual grief and sadness and despair that made him cry.
I guess, what you want it to be is up to you.

^ I reckon it's B personally. I don't think Grima is a bad man, and perhaps he thought Saruman just wanted to teach the Rohan people a lesson. I don't think he fully appreciated the whole Sauron/Saruman thing. Until that moment. Maybe he was even thinking of Eowyn.

Personally, I would like to believe B) as weel. As it would make Gríma just a man, who thought he was doing "good", while he was actually helping the forces of evil. If he really cries out of sadness and regret it makes people in a way feel pity for him, at least I feel pity for him. I mean, he trusted Saruman and thought he would help the world to become a better place and all that, but what happened wasn't his fault. Not at all. I'd like to think that maybe Saruman poisened not only Théoden's mind, but also Gríma's, which would explain, why he even helped him. I mean, he didn't get anything for helping Saruman. No treasures, no glory, no respect, nothing. so, why would he help him? Maybe Gríma never wanted all of this to happen and in the moment, when he saw this MASSIVE army he suddenly realised what he had done and the spell, that Saruman had put on him was undone, but by then,he thought it was already too late. That he had no other choice than staying with Saruman. Probably he felt responsible for everything and he thought, that when he returned to Rohan they would kill him right away. So he stayed. And also, in the book he throws the Palantir out of the window, what if he did know what it was? what if at that pint, he was actually trying to help the "good guys" and wanted Saruman to loose a lot of his power?? Just a thought, though. Feel free to disagree!

Well I think he knew what he was doing in as much as he did purposely tell Saruman where Theoden and the Rohan people would be heading. So I believe he did want war with the Rohan people for whatever reason - perhaps something that happened to him in his past - but I don't believe he truly knew the extent of Saruman's power or army. The only hint of what Grima would get out of it, was Eowyn, which I suppose could even be the reason he allied himself with Saruman in the first place. But at the same time I don't think he wanted Theoden killed. Because when he was atop Orthance with Saruman he seemed to be listening to what Theoden was saying and he was going to do what he said, which if he had hated Theoden he wouldn't have done.
I actuallly think Grima is one of the more complicated characters. I like him and I've always felt sorry for him, as he's not just an "evil" man. There's more to him than that.

I see I'm not the only one who thinks there's more to Grima than meets the eye. He definitely has ulterior motives that are alluded to, but it's sometimes hard to really define who he is based on what we've seen.

It's actually quite crazy that Tolkien wrote a history of characters that don't play a major part in the history of Middle-earth, and yet he never fully gave Grima his due and wrote more about him. There is so much more to Grima but we'll never truly know. And that to me, is bad authormanship and it's really frustrating.

Probably Tolkien never wrote more about these certain characters, because he wanted people to make up their own little stories about them. Just the way he never told us what or who Tom Bombadil is, because he thought that every story needed a mystery. And maybe there are more mysteries than Tom Bombadil.
