I won't say that anyone deserves to die - but for Smeagol it was merciful, I guess. He was completely screwed... There was nothing to save - and he died very happy - holding the ring etc...

I'm not going to say if I wanted or thought Smeagol/Gollum deserved to die, but I am going to say that he had to die. If he hadn't of been there to take the ring (or actually bite) Frodo might not have thrown the ring in himself and if Sam had taken it and thrown it in Frodo might have jumped after it, because as you know Frodo was pretty corrupted by the ring too, but not as badly as Smeagollum. It was all a matter of fate.....

Frodo was the only one who ever came close to understanding him, which is why he was so merciful

interesting point. and i think the mercy came from Frodo seeing a little of himself - or what he could become - in Gollum.

Gollum was living a wretched existance anyway

i dont think anyone deserves to die! he was corrupted by the ring, so it wasnt really all his fault.

i dont think smeagol should have died.it would have been interesting 2 see what would have happened 2 him when the ring, the only thing he cared about and the only thing really keeping him alive, was destroyed.i always felt sorry 4 smeagol cos ,i mean ,the poor bloke lived for 500 years in a cave talking 2 a ring and eating fish!

True Kitoky, but Hollywood and books are made to have debates and conflicts. If we were talking about real life, I think he doesn't deserve to die, he needed to die, but it would have been better if he died happy, not corrupted. Like Gandalf said "Many who live deserve death, and some who die deserve life". No one lives forever.

I don't think he should have died I like him. It would have been cool too, if he was alive after the ring was destroyed, I wonder how he would be.

Well, we all know what good old Gandalf said:
Some who live deserve death, and some who die deserve life. Can you give that to them?...Don't be hasty to deal out judgement.
Which I think is sound advice for all of us
