It seems to me he was in comlete and utter shock just as he realizes, "Wait a sec, the Eagles could've flown us here? Why did we have to walk?!?!"

I'm sorry, that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the movie. But I personally agree with everyone who said that he was just passing out, I suppose that as the task was completed he must have felt strange, exhausted, overwhelmed, etc.

I dont' think he was even thinking, he just closed his eyes, relieved cuz it was all over and he just felt how the weight was gone, so he just closed his eyes and dreamed away

I agree with the idea that he wasn't thinking at all. When you've been through that much, he probably was just in a daze and didn't know what was happening, or what to think at all.

I tend to agree. ;) After all, it had been a pretty grueling quest, with even his spirit being attacked, and it was over. On top of that, the Eagles were taking him away from the fire and darkness, thus saving him when he thought he would die. He may not have known what to think, or even if he was still alive. *sigh* I'm always so happy for him in that scene, because he's my favorite character ever, and he's free... :)

I don't know what he was thinking of course, but i go for comedy so i would say he was thinking "Oh great, now what do I have to destroy?"
