What did you think of Theoden's speech? His last speech.
Quote: Théoden: Arise, Arise, Riders of Théoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now! Ride now! Ride! Ride for ruin, and the world's ending! Death!
I think it was awesome. They went up against massive odds to aid Gondor, and Gondor didn't even help them when they needed it! I think that was very brave. 8)

Yes, that was an awesome speech. I'm weepy, so I start crying every time I see it. *shakes head* I'm really bad that way.

The music in the background while he's speaking is especially beautiful. Whenever I hear the music on the soundtrack, I can hear him talking in my head and I always want to shout "Yeah! Let's go!"

I love it...not so much the speech but the whole general scene...is beautiful..I love how in the exact moment he says "sun rises" the camera zooms up and the sun DOES rise at THAT moment, lol then when they all scream "death" is just GAAHHHHH!!!!! *getting chills* I don't like the speech itself much cuz is not very inspiring...Aragorn's speech in the black gate is WAY more inspiring..the last thing soldiers need to hear is that they're marching to their death..they KNOW it but they don't necesarily need to hear it...`when Aragorn starts talking, the camera shows the soldiers and they all are like "ok, this is it, we're done, toasted, screwed" and when he's done they're all smiling like "YEAH! LETS ROLL!" lol, that makes a big difference..the rohirrim are already passionate and looove to fight while Gondorians are more slow, so each speech show the opposite of what the soldiers seem to be like

Isn't it funny, though, that the sun rises behind them yet they're coming from the North? I noticed that right away.
I think he says 'ere the sun rises' yet the sun is rising so they didn't attack 'ere' the sun rose...
Anyway...

I think that this speech was demonstrated to show how much faith Theoden had in his small army. He kept the faith and wanted to encourage them, I belive that this speech was magical and moving at the same time. Although he realises that his chances of pulling through this battle [the biggest battle of middle-earth] are almost non-existent, he encourages his men in a very patriotic way. Tolkien of course as you all know, based the lord of the rings on his exprience in the war. I therefore find this scene even more entrancing for the very fact that i can believe that tolkiens army may have been given a similar speech when they were heading off for war. It's soo sad

Quote: Gamling: Too few have come. We cannot defeat the armies of Mordor.
Théoden: No, we cannot. But we will meet them in battle nonetheless.
Theoden is one of my favorite characters.

And they picked the perfect person to play him!
I like to listen to Bernard Hill's voice on the cast commentary...

I love that scene as well. It's an awesome speech.
The scene with Theoden's speech and the one with Aragorn's speech in front of the gates of Mordor belong to my favourite ROTK scenes. Both have such a special atmosphere.

i love that speech - it makes even me want to go kick some orc butt and i'm pretty much a pacifist! i love that they'll fight, even when they see no hope, simply because its the right thing to do - if more people were willing to take risks for their morals, the world would be a far better place.
theoden's such a great character and i find it really moving the way he proves himself so that when he dies, he can go to the halls of his fathers without being ashamed.

Ride for ruin, and the world's ending! Death!" -Theoden It was quite an inspiring speech to give, and inspire was what the Rohirrim needed in that hour, for it appeared going in that they were on a suicide charge to honour the friendship and alliance and the Oath of Cirion and Eorl!
This speech, the clashing of spears, and the charge was one of the best scenes in the movies!
