Perhaps this has been addressed already, if so, then I apologize.
After they all hail the glorious dead and Eowyn presents the cup to Aragorn and he drinks and turns away, Theoden King comes into frame and states: "I am happy for you. He is an honorable man". She replies: "They were both honorable men".
To whom is she referring? Is this so simple that it's looking me in the face and I'm just not seeing it?

That confuses me as well... unfortunately I have no answer, other than maybe she once loved someone else... but that can't be right...hmmm...*is stumped*

Well, I'm not sure what was in Fran and Phillipa's minds when they wrote this, but I immediately thought of Theodred, King Theoden's son who recently had been killed. Ewyon, may have been showing honor to her cousin who would have been part of the 'glorious dead'. You can tell by Theoden's face at the time he is making the toast that he is in pain emotional pain at this time. This is my take on your question, GotC.

My most abject apologies; you are so correct. I went back and checked (with the subtitles on) and you are SO right....she does say "You are" instead of "They were".....all this time I guess my ears have been deceiving me!

And I also should have checked what Eowyn actually said before I answered GotC's question.

Ohh since the actual dialogue has been made clear now, perhaps you would help me understand another - possibly very obvious detail about that scene.
What is is the meaning behind Theoden's words: "I am happy for you. He is an honourable man."
I got the impression that he knows Eowyn's wish to be with Aragorn and he gives her his blessings and approval? But Aragorn and her have made no pact or bond at this time (and never will) and all of a sudden it sounds like they are already planning a wedding!!

Well, this one has been discussed at some length somewhere else on here, but the way I take it is that he's just saying that he recognizes her feelings for Aragorn and that he is acknowledging (or approving if you wish to term it that way) her choice. Remember, Theoden does wish for her to be happy and he has no knowledge of Aragorn's love for Arwen. Therefore it would be logical for him to come along and give his approval. That's all it was, the way I see it.

Thank you for answering it and pointing me to the appropriate thread. I haven't been much around the LotR discussion boards for a long time now and I'm not up to date with the discussions anymore.
Your explanation seems plausible. It is a great scene and it is a pity it didn't make it to the theatrical version.

I don't really get what Theoden King ment when he said "It was not I who led our people into victory." Did he mean that he's telling her in some way that he almost killed everyone if not for Aragorn?

Ok. That's what I'd thought.
