Good question Elrond's Wife. Personally, I don't think Gandalf would have been aloud to. He was sent on a certain task by the Valar, and maybe killing those Orcs and the Cave Troll was not part of it.

He was forbidden to use his Maia-powers to persuade the folks of the West to follow his advices, and it costs much power to fight with magic. This is, what the books say.
But in the movie, Gandalf fights against the Nazgûl, so why not against Trolls... I don't know. PJ should answer it

Well, nazgul are much different from trolls. Trolls arn't somewhere between life and death. They have been corrupted, but not in the way that the nazgul have.

yeah ive wondered why Gandalf doesnt just summon up a few lightning storms or something during the battles.but i agree with Larael, that probably wasnt the task he was sent to do.

Do you mean that Valar gave Mithradir a long list that is the missions he should do, just like buying several things in the shopping mall? But the evil creatures were also made by Morgoth and Sauron, he should also kill them instead of just calling soldiers to kill, I am sure killing orcs is a mission in Valar's list, and Gandalf forgot it!

*Gandalf mode*
I most certainly did not!
*checks list* Let's see, downfall Sauron... neutralize Saruman... oh... *hides list*
Anyway magic in Middle Earth isn't D&D style where fireballs and what not is everywhere (although you may see some).
@goldelf Storms would simply be too hard to do in the big battles. Minas Tirith Sauron had his power over the weather, Helm's Deep I was on a tight schedule. (I had to get there at dawn in five days) And old Witch-King had to smash the center of my power. (not render me magicless, just take away a very useful aid of focus) And I didn't exactly want to put up a huge sign to the Eight Nazgul during the Black Gate saying "GANDALF IS HERE!"
You see, the time and words necessary would be very dangerous and attention grabbing. A bit of fire might have helped here or there, but it's very hard to create something from nothing... I can't really burn steel, not flammable. My magic is more or less seen in another fashion, inspiration. Notice how the men follow my orders without a single doubt, and that my voice projects so well.
*person mode*
I love talking in character.

Yeah, lol , that was good, lol.
But i mean, it's like, apart from the fact he was rather distracted during all the battles, think aobut it this way - less logically. How much fun would it be if Gandalf zapped all the orcs, and thus ended all the awsome battles? I mean, wasn't it more exciting the way it was?! lol

I think it's fairly obvious that Gandalf's great task was to guide and assist the people of Middle Earth against the Enemy, but it wasn't his duty to win the war for them.
I think the movie was done perfectly and Gandalf still came across very powerful and mighty.
