I read The Hobbit when I was 8 or 9, after I saw my dad reading the LotR trilogy and wondered what it was about. Then I read the trilogy.
I actually waited until RotK was in theaters, before I started watching the movies. Of course I didn't go to the theater, so I had to wait until it came out on DVD. It was torture, let me tell you what!

I tried reading the books when i was very young, didn't understand them, so i read the Hobbit instead.
Then i saw FotR on DVD, was hooked, then read all three books before i saw TTT and RotK. Then i started to read Tolkien's other books.

I saw the movies first. I didnt even know LOTR existed till my Dad made us all watch FOTR as a "Family movie" we watched it till Flight to the Ford, then stopped it and my Dad said that we didnt have to finish watching it tomorrow tonight if we didnt want to.
I finished watching it,as did my other 3 sibs, but my older sister didnt.
and then I entered the wonderful world of LOTR.

I read the books in about 2000 before the movies all started generating hype, then saw Fellowship and TTT only days apart, Fellowship on DVD Two Towers at AMC, then I bought all the books except Silmarillion. RotK is worn out now, the cover is coming off!

First I read the books... then the movies came and brightened my world. =P I read Silmarilion after the movies. But I was a fan before them. I caught it from my Dad, who has all the 1970 versions of the books and stuff... =P

My father read the story some years ago, I didn't noticed. But when we got the first movie on VHS I felt in love! A friend joined in and we started to read the books and we went to the two towers and we became real fans. Unfortunately I've never seen the Fellowship of the Ring in the cinema But TTT and ROTK many times! I now got the books seperately and the omnibus. And I've got the S.E.E. of the films too!
So the movies came first for me, and I'm very glad the did!!
Lotr for ever!!!

Hanasían wrote: (posted: Sun Jan 21, 2007 7:16 pm) The books. Tolkien's portrayal in his own words that built visions of it all in my mind. The movies were entertaining, but they were only Peter Jackson's visions of Tolkiens portrayal of the story. I came to this board with these words, and with them I depart. It came to light recently what I could see was the future, but was in denial about for so many years. It was clearly stated to me that it didn't matter if one saw the movies or read the books, it was considered the same. Since I had always thought that the Books forums were for discussing the books and the story put forth by J.R.R. Tolkien by people who read them, and the movie forums were for discussing the movies and the story put forth in them by people who watched them, it came as just a little bit of a shock to find that there was really no difference here, and so it appears I have been mistaken. Personally, I would find myself to be absolutely rude to go into a book forum and commence to posting my thoughts without having actually read the books. And even more rude to think I could say anything based on my only watching a movie made based on the books. Since there is not really any difference considered between the two, I would suggest the good people who run this site merge the book and movie forums into one forum for Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, and Return of the King. It would get all the discussion in one area, and it wouldn't be pretentious in alluding to an existence of a Book forum. I have enjoyed my 7 years drifting around this place making a grand total of 457 posts. The ironic thing is of these posts, most were made in music and movie threads, for discussing the books had become a diminishing art since around 2001.
To Lady Nienor Níniel, your honest questions and opinions on the books tested what I knew and thought I knew of them, and has re-kindled a fire in me to re-affirm my grasp on all that is contained in them. So I have started to read the books once again. For this I thank you.
To Lady Erin Vanya, I thank you as well, for you have brought to light for me that I have no place amongst those who consider the movies as the benchmark and the books an inconvenience.
It is the life of a Ranger to come and to go, and go I must. Thank you for all the fish.

I read the books first, and about a year after that I watched the movies.
