May I ask something? Why do you know that he is a Maia? How did you come to this conclusion?

i liked tom bombadil, i think mainly because it was nice to have some 'comic relief' after pretty heavy events just before. it was nice to have a happy and jolly character around to brighten up the story a bit

I loved Tom Bombadil!! He is such a unique and awesome charater I love all his little songs and ryhmes The chapter with Tom is great too cause it gives you a small break from the Ring issue and it's just the Hobbits hanging out at his house and hearing stories and stuff before they delve back into peril and the quest. I also luv his pony Fatty Lumpkin lol wut an adorable name

I like what you said about a breaks in the peril of the quest Rosswen. Tom Bombadil, Rivendell and Lothlorien are definitely great breaks and give us a little while each time to soak up some, what was that you said? Oh yeah, some hanging out and stories and stuff....
...time to soak up some wisdom and joy and beauty.

Tom Bombadil is what we should all be like. Care for our own place in the world, and be content with our happiness.

I love Tom! I was really bummed that he got left out of the movie. He's so zany and fun. I think LotR needs a character like that, since most of the story is so...noble and bittersweet, I guess.

He is an entertaining character, and (I don't mean this as an insult) such a goofball!

He's just a a little eccentric that's all. He provides a much needed comic element to the book and plus his songs are very cool. Any other opinions on this????

I don't really know what to think about him.
On the one side he's very happy and very helpfull, and that makes him a very "light" character in a heavy trilogy.
But on the oter hand, it anoyes me, that he's so different. He can do whatever he likes with the One Ring, but he doesn't seem to have a real part in the book. He's just a side-character.
Perhaps it's the problem that we don't know much about him and therefore we don't like him, because we don't understand it all...

I spose Tom is like that. I think Tolkien wanted a blend of knowledge and innocence in FOTR and I think Tom does fullfil that role as he doesnt seek for power but has the wisdom of ages and a good dose of common sense to keep him aware of th e matters of the outside world, but he doesnt let the world get @ him lol.

Tom is just an old part of the world whose "use", for lack of a better term, has gone beyond the 3rd age. I think he's sort of in limbo as far ashis existence is concerned. He sticks to his own "little" world and is content.

That is a agood thing as it shows he sticks to what he knows and loves instead of wandering and as a help that can be counted on to be in not gone fishin!!

I found him very annoying and I'm glad they didn't include Tom in the movie. All of his songs made me want to fall asleep, and I actually did skip through most of them.
