the longbow was the technological predecessor of the recurve - the material doesn't have to be as flexible, and it's easier to make and takes less time. so i think the use of the longbow in lotr is perfectly justified ... i know that it can also be used as a quarterstaff if you happen to run out of arrows. the korean hwarang used to train that.

By the way... I like the idea of carrying weapons on my back. like swords and bows. How would you carry both bow and quiver on your back... I mean technically speaking... I couldn't find any good pictures of any archers (e.g. Legolas) showing how they strapped bow and arrows to their backs...

It looked to me like Legolas stuck his bow through the straps of his quiver when he had it on his back. I think Aragorn's bow was small enough that when it was unstrung, he simply put it in his quiver, but I'm not certain on either count.

Carrying swords on your back is kind of a cool idea, but I honestly prefer the idea of carrying them at your waist--it's a lot easier to draw them that way.

Hmm... but I prefer the long bows which are almost as tall as the person.. that would be a problem to fit that one into the quiver... Perhaps I should ask in the Archery club...
In RP I prefer to carry the sword on my back when traveling... having the sword by the side is just too... err.. warrior-like and in the way...

Yeah, I would seriously trip over it all the time. I mean, maybe if you're used to it you wouldn't, but I'm not exactly tall either so unless it was a short sword I think it would be almost necessary for me personally to carry it over my shoulder. I like the idea of me carrying a sword...

Hmm... For me, it depends on what kind of character it is. But I agree with Meldawen, even though I am acctually quite tall for my age, I think I would always trip over the sword/scabbord(sp).

For an oh so graceful idiot like me, sword on the waist is hard for walking through doors. And sword on the back is painful, especially when you wear it for a while. It forces a rigid straight back and wariness when it comes to bending over (for example bumping your head on the hilt. not exactly what you'd call a dashing warrior-like move.)

Believe me, I've tried both with my wooden greatsword.

But in a character, sword on the back is definitely cooler and more unique.

I personally think that the best thing for myself would be a sword at my side, with multiple straps attaching it to the belt portion of the scabbard, keeping it from dragging on the ground. I still think I would trip... I can trip over a blade of grass sometimes...

I would think that it really just depends on how you wear your sword at your waist as to whether or not it will get in the way as you go through a door or something. And what type of sword, too. I think a greatsword would definitely be more difficult to carry at your waist than something like a saif (which is cooler, too).

But yeah, I can imagine that wearing a sword across your back would force you to walk straight, so it's actually probably a good thing to do if you want to get good posture.

I already have good posture...people comment on it all the time, especially when I'm playing the piano. I got so used to sitting up perfectly straight when I was little that it sorta carried over But it would get uncomfortable after a while, good posture or not.

Hmmm... thanks for the replies on how to carry weapons... For me I would just prefer carrying my weapons on my back so they wouldn't get in the way, and I love back packs... see any connection there...? lol
My thing with swords on the back might originate in Ninja Turtles... even though Leonardo wasn't my favorite (I actually think Donatello was... err... the purple Ninja Turtle, aye, the one with the fighting stick!).
And I don't think it would be so uncomfortable since the sword would be angled across your back.. I used to do gymnastics and dance so, like Meldawen, I tend to have a good posture without noticing...
