ok, I guessed that was what you were getting at. Now, in my opinion, it's Beren, but something tells me that Tolkien wrote that about Hurin?

Right--Hurín was the mightiest, hence his surname, which is Thalion.

Your turn.

lol, Thalion means strong, not mighty. Beleg is mighty :P (I should know, I named some villages on an online game those two names, after finding their meanings :P)

What was the later name of Cabed-en-Aras?

Right...:P Whoops.

Cabed-en-Aras was renamed Cabed Naeramath after Nienor cast herself into the Teiglin there.

Yep, and Cabed Naeramarth means 'The Leap Of Dreadful Doom'.

Your question.

Thanks--I had forgotten what exactly it meant.

Okay...what was the one place in Western Middle-earth that survived (wasn't sunk beneath Belaeger, in other words) besides Lindon/Ossiriand? A place that we know survived just from looking in LotR?

The hill of Himring, where Maedhros' fortress stood. Except, in the Third Age it is know as Himling.

[That was a good question. For a second I couldn't think of somewhere else. but only a second :P]

Lol. I wasn't sure how difficult that would be--it really depends on how much time you spend looking at the maps, which is something I do a lot. :)

Your turn.

I won't ask you a geography question then :P But I spend a lot of time studying the maps too :P

By what name was Faelivrin better known?

Rats. No Geography ones. :annoyed2:

Faelivrin was Gwindor's name for Finduilas of Nargothrond.

Well, you can ask geography ones if you like, I won't mind :P

And yep, that's right, but do you know what it means?

And your go ;)

Um, it has something to do with Eithel Ivrin, I believe. I forget what the "Fael" means, though.

How many people do we know were killed by Balrogs in The Silmarillion? like, people whose names we know.

Yep, it is interpreted as 'the gleam of the sun on the pools of Ivrin'.

As for the question, it's a right beggar. D'you expect us to read all the way through the Sil. to find out who was slain by Balrogs? So to start with, I'm throwing a random guess of *thinks: Well, Glorfindel was one. And there was at least one other in the big battles, so...* 3?!

Edit: Ok, using some concise sources, Feanor was also slain by balrogs...

...it doesn't take that long to figure out. There were not that many, and they were all fairly notable. You've got part of the answer, but not quite yet. 3 is incorrect.

I can recall: Feanor, Fingon, Glorfindel, Ecthelion of the Fountain(at least they slew each other(is it still slew?not slayed or something like that?) :) ), Gandalf doesn't count I presume.

Ok, so that makes sense. 4 is the answer then? Gandalf doesn't count, for two reasons. Firstly, this is a Sil. quiz, and he doesn't come into it. Second, he wasn't killed by a Balrog (though I guess that is a matter of debate :P)
