didn't Aragorn go out into the wilderness to sort of prove himself to Elrond and *thinks hard about it* to get away from Rivendell for a time and kind of go into hiding until the propor moment came to reveal himself? (I really need to brush up on my Aragorn/Arwen history. )

Concerning the "How-did-Aragorn-become-a-ranger" discussion:
Yep, I think we went indeed into the wilderness to proove himself worthy of Arwen. Elrond had some doubts as Arwen was much older and much more experienced and I think he said that Aragorn shouldn't marry her or any other woman until he had proved himself as worthy. As a result of this, he became a ranger, got to know Gandalf, fought under another name in Rohan etc.
I'm not completely sure about this, but this is at least what I remember of this part of the Tale of Arwen and Aragorn. But I'll check that as soon as possible.
But wasn't Aragorn's family some kind of ranger-family anyways?

^Yep, I think he stayed away longer, because suddenly all his self doubts concerning his future kingship appeared and he didn't really know how to face them and needed more time to think about that.

Ok, that's what I sorta thought. Thanks for explaining it better (I guess it's been a few months since I read the tale of Aragorn and Arwen but it's one of my favorite stories ever!)
