*jumps in on several conversations at once*
I sometimes reuse characters, but more often, I just reuse names. I've Eshtok and Solech a few times. Usually I try not to use the same name in two RPs that are active at the same time. I have reused the character Cu'scath- he's been a few different races, but essentially the same personality. lol
I usually play male characters, especially in fantasy, sci-fi, or historical RPs. I think I first started playing males due to an... abundance of female characters in some of the RPs I joined. Now I just enjoy it more, I guess. I'm half-afraid if I were to try another female fantasy character, she'd go Mary-Sue on me. lol
I'm fine playing female characters in modern day RPs, since I can just make them sort of like me or people I know. For a fantasy RP, though, I'm not sure. It kinda relates to the setting, you know? Most fantasy RPs take place in a somewhat midieval (can't spell that word) time setting, where women would likely be discouraged from doing "mens' work". Namely, fighting, and if I'm joining an RP that's going to involve fighting, I don't want a character that doesn't know the first thing about weapons, you know? So, I guess that's why I don't play many female charries. I take my hat off to people who are able to play females and not have them become Mary-Sues! *takes off her hat*
And, romance. I'm fine with romance in an RP, but I don't really like it when people are paired up from the beginning. It's like arranged marriages or something. lol I don't mind romance, I just usually try to avoid it. In one RP I joined, I did <i>nothing</i> at all to encourage it, but a female character started swooning over my male character from the minute she saw him. I was kinda ornery- I make up a story about how he had been married, but was separated painfully from his wife- I think she had died- and so he just wasn't ready to be in another relationship. *gag* Yeah, I was kinda desperate to avoid romance in that one. lol I never had to use the excuse, though, thankfully.
I'm fine with romance if it sorta develops naturally, and is "real". Not "I love you!" "I love you too!" *kiss* I like romance where people have problems, and are struggling to work through them... as long as those problems don't look like a soap opera. </spiel>

*seconds everything in Elenya's speech about male characters*
What I think is difficult for my own Rp-style is that I'm not as good at English as my native tongue. Quality of a character, I think, is shown in language, dialogue or description of the actions but as I'm not familiar with alot of proverbs or words it's hard to reach that level. [/blabbering]

*Agrees with all and everything said*
I think replaying a character usually has to do with what kind of RP it is. For PotC, I have about 8 different characters, but only 2 for Real Life RP's.
I used to be a little nervous about playing a male character, but since I've started, I've found that it's pretty easy. It's not so much as what gender it is to me; after all, variety is the spice of life.
And romance... I've played in a few romance RP's, and yes, it does get annoying sometimes. Like Aerandir said, the people playing the characters that fall in love have to be good at it, or else it turns into a mushygoopy mess. And like someone else said, it's better as it develops over time and isn't just "Hi, my name is _____ and I love you!" Again, I'm not against romance or anything, it just needs to be well-played and not rushed.

Haha. After being the only boy among five kids (and the youngest, and thus the most malleable), I still wouldn't dare to haphazard a guess as to the workings of the female mind. Ever. Hence, I refuse to RP as one.
For that, my macho caribou, I shall make one of the Hall of Fame awards who can best play the opposite gender.
I don't spend that much effort on most of my characters. Usually I google a picture and go from there. I think the posts themselves are more important than the characters. Also, I find it helpful to create a character after the rpg has started, for convenience of jumping into the plot and filling in whatever role's most needed. Most of my characters when I first started were female, but I shifted into male from the *cough* gender imbalance around here. Sometimes I think I understand males better than females. Yes, I'm a feminine disgrace. *hides in corner and sulks with Elenya*
About romance... I second Melda. Go look at Crystal. M/K can do it better. *ahem* Romance is an automatic spotlight hogger. In rpgs with a lot of people, avoid it.

Though, I'm actually a girl, whereas you're a guy. So it's a bit more reasonable for you to stay with guys.
Eeh, romance isn't that great. [I know, I am such the atypical girl, right?] But it is just too....not realistic. People need to have problems and fights and not love each other right off the bat. That's one reason why I dislike so many romances.

I'm...a typical girl. Kind of a romance fanatic. I do, however, agree that picture-perfect romances are boring. Real-life romance isn't like that, so why should fictional romance be?
I also agree with LDM...romance can make people drop out faster than pretty much anything else. I used to RPG with a group of people, mostly LotR, and the two had these two romantically involved characters that they used EVERYWHERE, and it killed stuff, because they would go three pages of Luna-and-Anaring (character names) and totally leave everyone else in the dust. Not fun

Oh, I know, Nurr--but you're still another person who doesn't like playing females.
Macho Caribou? That's a new one.
And as for that RPG Award--I think I shall very studiously avoid it, for once.
M/K can do it better. Definitely.

*points to sig* I know
I don't think my males are too bad at all. I only have the one (the Phantom) who's an RPG character, but I've written them in other things too and I think I'm okay at it. Not as good as I am at females, but maybe that's to be expected.

I have had thoughts of having a female as a character though I have not seen too many males have a character that is one.

Oh, sorry Smeag, I didn't notice.
Are you already in an RPG, Christian?

So, Melda--when are you going to start your Númenorean RPG?
Ohohohoh. New topic--what do you guy's think is the most RPG-friendly (as in, most plot possibilies) story world/universe (of the ones that have been on A-U)? Not counting OF ones. Only existing canon worlds/universes.
I think I'd have to say the one with the most possibilities is the Star Wars universe. I think.

^^ Why is that Aerandir? ( I never watched Star Wars so I'm curious) I think that historical settings also have good possibilities of creating a good RPG. Although it often occurs to me that a good plot doesn't neccisarily make a RPG survive. I've joined alot of RPG which had a really good plot but died because a lack of posting.

Well, the Star Wars universe is huge, and it's not just one galaxy. It is a universe, with gads of cultures of varying degrees of technological advancement, and has a timeline that spans some twenty thousand years with remarkably little chronicling of events--so much happens, and so much is unrecorded, that there's pretty much boundless possibilities for plots and plot twists and stuff in it.

O_O
Revenge of the Sith had awesome music. That alone makes it worth watching.
And the book is far better. It's one of the single bestest books I've ever read. You should read it (after reading other Star Wars books, of course). And after WoT.
We all hate Writer's Block, Aerlinn, so of course we know exactly what you're going through. We all get it from time to time (and then promptly descend into frustration).

*dejection* But I wanted PE to keep going
I'm not overly familiar with SW, but the PotC setting is also pretty flexible. Lots of room to come up with alternate plots.

Ditto, Melda. It had potential.
The PotC setting, though, is stuck in 17th/18th century earth, though. Hence, LotR is more flexible.
