Hmmm...

Are you sure they're .gbr brushes?

If,so..maybe the file was damaged.Try re-downloading them, and see if that works. That happened to me on one brush set I downloaded the other day.:(

I'm very bad at explaining..and I don't know all the uses for masks, but the way I use them is for blending.
When I blend a banner,I put my first picture into a new white image..then add the second picture as a new layer.

Then I click on the second image, and click>Mask>Add Layer Mask>Black>OK

Then I use a soft paintbrush in white to softly blend in the parts I want.(Example..the second banner in my signiture)

So,masks to me are a way of blending.....

Welcome!:)

Oh,another thing..there are masks textures you can find online and download. They block out portions of an icon or banner...I'm just learning how to use them.:D

I haven't found any gimp user that can make those,so I really have no idea. The only suggestion I can offer is to make a border in gimp (Decor>Add Border) on a new transparent layer, and then set it to overlay. It might get the same effect.Or you can ahnddraw a border using a thing square tool,or google frame border textures/brushes and set them to overlay.
Hope that helps a little?:)

Oh,and if you find a good way, will you tell me please?:D

I'll give it a try. I kept looking for a tool to draw just a straight line, but couldn't seem to find anything. If I figure something out I'll let you know. And thanks!

Do you mean a border line, or lines such as the ones I have on my bottom banner?

For a border, I usually fill an entire new layer with a color (generally a black/grey/white one), then use the rectangle tool to delete as much of the inside as I want.

For the ones I've got on my banner, there is a pattern already in GIMP for lines going straight across. You just fill in a new layer with the pattern and voila! For diagonal, the easiest way I've found is to do a new layer. When the new layer box comes up, make it (for a standard banner) 1400x600. Then fill it with the straight lines, and rotate the layer 45 degrees.

Hope that helped!

That's perfect! I considered that before with just erasing the inside, but knew that wasn't worth it. Thanks so much Nurr!

And the Design->Border works as well. There's also Filter->Distort->Blinds which gives a number of lines
