I mean, your stereotypical MS is perfect, yes? So amazing with weapons, witty, smart, beautiful, etc, etc. Meaning that a complete non-MS is clumsy, stupid, inexperienced, and kinda...boring. If some MS traits make your character interesting, then why not have some? That's not to say I think your characters are boring, just pointing out
I will like to say that I agree with that statement...and that it makes a lot of sense.

I like to think I make sense, yes. Heh. That's not to say you should strive for Sueishness, however; strive for a good character, and if that character picks up some MS traits along the way...well, it's not some sort of debilitating disease
So, to segue in a proper manner (hehe) that brings me to a question. What makes a 'good', interesting character, that isn't run-of-the-mill or average? Are there any particular traits that contribute?
For me I thinks it's motivation. Why your character does what he or she does, what made her that way - if that's thought out well, then a lot of other good stuff can follow. Whereas if you just say "not a very nice person, sort of vindictive, has some attitude" (or some such) and leave it at that, it doesn't satisfy as well. I almost think a character's history should come [i]before their personality, or at least develop at the same time. Thoughts?

I agree, but I think description helps a lot as well. If you describe your charactor in good detail and let everyone else see deep into your charactors mind and soul, then you can make them more interesting, because you know more about them, especially if they have a good, humorous personaitliy with a good background.

I agree on the Sueishness part. One place I read said something like MS-ish qualities are like the seasonings for a character. Some make the charrie better, but too many can be, well, too much. lol
I think there are a lot of things that can make a character interesting. Personality, history, appearance, how they react to other characters, etc.

Description works to a point, I think. No matter how eloquently you describe a character, if it's a shallow and uninteresting character, it'll be hard to make it seem interesting. Introspection can only go so far, too. In my mind, it makes more of an impression to show a character reacting in certain situations. For example, if your character has an aversion to heights, it works far more effectively to introduce a scene in which he/she is exposed to their fear and freezes up because of it than it is to say "He/she was terrified of heights."
I like that way of putting it, Elenya. Like seasonings. But you wouldn't want to eat any type of pure seasoning

Okay, wake up, guys
How many of you would join if I made a contest to make a banner/blend/random graphic of one of your RP characters?

Thanks for bumping, Tur.
Sounds like a great idea, but personally, it depends. My spring break is in a week, so I should have time to choke up a graphic sometime then. I can't wait for summer. I'll actually have TIME (for minor, magnificent things such as rping).

That's a cool contest idea- I like seeing other people's characters! I'd probably try an entry.

Well, I'd make a rule that it has to be a new graphic Because as you can see, Smeag has one of hers already, I've been hauling around various Merrin banners for probably over a year, and you have one of Devarion. Sorry to burst your bubble there
Okay, I know we're all busy, so I'll make the due date a ways in advance and have it up as soon as I get organized. I just got back from a weekend away and am in dire need of a shower. I've also slept a total of about eight hours in the last two nights combined, so that requires some catching up on.
