He looked up at her, horrified. "Marian, don't." His tone was hushed, a whisper, making eyes that told her to ignore him.

"The law is the law, reguardless," he said flatly, then turned to the head guardsman. "What are the charges?"

The soldier gave almost a satisied look at Max as he read them off. "Theivery...murder...treason against the kingdom... and, more recently, resisting arrest. What is your verdict, sire?"

The king stared at Max for a long moment, who's head was hung slightly, then at Marian, then at the guard. "Keep him held in one of the cells for tonight. Then at dawn... take him out and execute him."

Marian looked at Max, horror written al over her face as she had heard where she was to be taken.

Max lunged at him, not caring that the chains bit into his arms as the guards yanked him back. "Don't you dare lay a hand on her!" he shouted furiously. "If you hurt her, I'll kill you!"

The head guard held him back, laughing. "Nice choice of last words, dead man. C'm on!" He forcefully led Max away. Max looked over his shoulder at Marian with eyes that were a sea of dismay and despair as they were parted.

The soldiers roughly got Max into his cell; he'd fought them the whole way like a mad-man until they finally threw him to the straw-covered floor. At least something was there to break his fall. Sorta.
