^Yes,I agree completly with you.Tolkien sure respected women, you just see how all the characters are important and loved by the readers(Luthien,Varda,Galadriel,Celebrían,Idril,Arwen,Eowyn,Rosie, even Lobelia in the Scouring of the Shire!).
Not like in other stories(I hope you know which story I was talking about in the 1 post,I made it's own thread in Michel Delving Closed Eyes ).

And for this scene, really I don't know.I like Arwen but I also like Glorfindel, well go Glory! Goofy Happy Bounce Grin Laugh/bounce

I think it should have been Glorfindel, because A) I really like Glorfindel in the books, both FOTR and Silmarillion, and because I really don't think that Elrond would let his daughter steal a horse, steal his sword (yes, she has Hadhafang, Elrond's sword), and then go gallivanting off into the wilderness against Ringwaiths and with Aragorn.....

it would have been nice to have Glorfindel but i think it was a good idea to have Arwen take the scene.it gave her a much more dramatic introduction to the story.

Ah yes, the old issues of Glorfindel Vs. Arwen. *sighs* Well, I have to say that my opinion definately goes toward Glorfindel. My reasons? Well, for one I think it is TOTALLY unrealistic that Arwen would have gone out to save the hobbits. Why?

1. She was alone.
2. She was Elrond's only daughter.
3. She was princess of Rivendell.
4. She was the Evenstar of her people.
5. There were NAZGUL out there.
6. There were probably a MILLION other MALE elves out there who would have been PERFECT for that job! (a soldier, a scout, a member of the COUNCIL even, but not Elrond's youngest child!!)

She was alone.

Yes, but so was Glorfindel.

She was Elrond's only daughter.

I don't really get this one, unless you're saying he wouldn't let her go because of that. Then I would probably agree with you. However, in the movie, she was a good rider, had the power to call down the flood, did not fear the Nine, and I think it's implied she could fight. (That isn't as ridiculous as some people think, Elven women were nearly or as strong as the men, and it's said that high elven women were trained for battle, though they didn't go out unless as a last resort. That's my understanding of it, anyways.) If she could do that, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't send her.

She was princess of Rivendell.

Actually, she wasn't. She was the Lady of Rivendell. Not a princess. However, all that really says to me is she is a high born, powerful elf. Royalty in M-E weren't protected behind the lines, they led their troops into battle. (Theoden, Eomer, Imrahil, Aragorn, Celeborn...)

She was the Evenstar of her people.

See previous answer. Grin

There were NAZGUL out there.

All the more reason to send as powerful a person as possible.

There were probably a MILLION other MALE elves out there who would have been PERFECT for that job! (a soldier, a scout, a member of the COUNCIL even, but not Elrond's youngest child!

I don't think a soldier or scout would have been able to cause the flood. And (at least part of) the reason they cut Glorfindel out is because they don't want tons of extra characters-there's almost too many already. Glorfindel shows up, rescues Frodo, speaks a few lines at the Council, then disappears. PJ couldn't have another blonde elf on a horse, it would be confusing. People already have trouble keeping it straight who's who.

For example, my mom recently watched the movie with me for the first time. We watched all 3, extended editions in the space of a month. And at the end, at Aragorn's coronation, she was COMPLETELY lost was to why he was being crowned king. She said, and I quote "Why's Aragorn being crowned? Because he's the hero? I thought Sam was the hero..." This despite all the references to Aragorn's claim (The council, Saruman, Boromir's last words, and several others.) There were too many characters swimming around in her head.

So, bookwise-definitely Glorfindel. Movie-definitely Arwen. I think Liv did a good job with that scene, it was well acted, tense, and exciting.

Hope I didn't offend anyone, and Peace, if I misunderstood what you were saying please feel free to set me straight!

Well, I think it would've been nice to have more of Glorfindel, but Arwen portrayed the scene very well, so it's hard to choose. Maybe both? Teehee

They should have had Glorfindel do the scene, because that is how it goes in the book. I don't like it all that much because it makes her into some sort of warrior-princess type - which she ISN'T. I suppose it is so people who haven't read the book can understand Arwen's heroism, which can be hard to understand if you haven't read the tale of Aragorn and Arwen in the book. She plays an important role without wielding a sword. Only Arwen's love for Aragorn made him not fall in love with Eowyn, breaking her heart. Mayhap if her heart were whole, he wouldn't have thrown aside her life by riding out to Pelennor fields and challenging the witch-king. If the witch-king had never been killed, then the battle for middle-earth might have gone quite differently.

Well, it makes more sense if it was Glorfindel. Arwen alone for what? Three days? Not likely! But for the movie purposes, it would be better if Arwen did it. They needed to have a bit more of Arwen then they did in the book. Also, if Glorfindel saved them, they would have to add a whole different character, which they would have to make into a bigger part.

It would've been interesting to meet Glorfindel, but I think Arwen going to meet them was fine. It set up the Aragorn/Arwen relationship. Plus it gives all the feminists something to be happy about, lol. She-elf goes out into the wilderness alone that's plagued by Nazgul to find her love and the injured hobbit. Power to her! LOL

On the Thain's Book, there's a picture of 'Glorfindel'. Actually it's a decipher card, but one of the elves that parts to reveal Arwen and Elrond at the coronation is Glorfindel. Wimpy looking elf! Man, I don't know if it's just me, but I was expecting someone... better looking. Come on, Glorfindel is a warrior, the balrog slayer. I wasn't pleased.

Arwen also stole his horse. XD

I'm totally for Arwen!
Because, even though I didn't like how they got away from the book-storyline most of the time, bringing Arwen in more often and giving her a bigger part during LotR was a very wise decision. I mean, in the books she doesn't appear very often, but you could figure out why she was important for Aragorn by reading the apendecies, but as in the movie they can't do that, they had to find a way to somehow get it into the main story. An I think it was good that they didn't put in Glorfindel, as they would've had another guy rescuing once again the Hobbits. In the book it didn't matter that he only appeared to rescue Frodo, speak a few lines at the Council and then just disappear again, but in the movies it wouldn't have made any sense to introduce a new character just to let him disappear again after he said two lines...it would have been too confusing for people who hadn't read the books and they certainly couldn't make a movie where you get the warning "If you haven't read the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, don't even bother going to see it, you won't understand half of it."
It's like with Tom Bombadil: Is he significant for the rest of the story? No.
Is Glorfindel significant for the rest of the story? No.
Is Arwen? Yes, she is, because all the only-movie-goers have to understand what's going on between her and Aragorn and the problem that she's one of the Eldar while he is mortal and why he keeps going when there is no hop left...

I hope I made a point here, but feel free to disagree...

Minuialwen, I absolutely agree with you! I like your point of view. And I had exactly the same problem with my mum...lol

And Eäryendë, I was disappointed too.

I've changed my mind-sort of. Personally, if they didn't put Glorfindel in (because I still think it's a bad idea to put in someone if they're not going to reappear and play a part in the story) I wish they'd sent Elladan and Elrohir-it would have been more realistic, and yes, true to the characters, and they could have followed it up with the twins appearing in RotK with the Rangers and the banner, etc.

That would have been really cool! And Arwen could've even rode with them, and Glorfindel could've joined making it one big happy hunting party. It actually has always bothered me that one person finds the group (Glorfindel or Arwen). I know they're elves, but it seems more likely that small groups would've been sent (2 or 3 or so) especially since the Nazgul were involved. I know Aragorn knows his was to Rivendell, but it still seems like someone should've stayed behind with them in the movie...slightly off topic so I'll get back on by saying how amazing it would've been if the four of them teamed up. I would've loved to see Elladan, Elrohir, and Glofindel.

And would they REALLY send ALL of those important people out in the SAME hunting party? I thought the idea was to be small and inconspicuous so the Nazgul WOULDN'T notice.

Like a thousand others, I think that since Glorfindel hasn't got much other part, it was a smart directing move to put Arwen in, because it introduced her earlier and in a more important way. They couldn't go around just casting twenty billion minor parts. It's not how the movie industry goes. It was ok in the book because that was how it was, but I don't think it would have been smart in the movie. Just my opinion. (As well as others', I guess.)
