I read The Hobbit and FOTR before the movie had come out and my parents said I had to read TTT before its movie came out, within that year I'd read the TTT and ROTK, lol.
Since then I've read them all 3 times, and am working up the courage for a forth. But I had faith that PJ would deliver and not rip fans of the books off, and he pleased my taste!

I started by watching the first movie and then reading the books. I have to say that I liked the books better. Not to say that I don't like the movies but I yell at the TV when things don't match up.

I watched the movies first. Started to read the books only a while ago, have just begun with TTT. But I think it makes it easier. Cause the reason that I waited to long with reading the books was that they are pretty heavy to read. At first I didn't even get through the prologue, but then I kept on reading and found out that it became easier and easier x) But by seeing the movies first I recognize events etc from the movies, which I think makes it easier.

I read the hobbit first. But didnt end up reading LotR until after i saw the movies and was amazed at them. From then onwards i was a die hard Tolkien fan.

I had tried to read the Hobbit some years before the movies came out but I never got past the first couple of chapters... I think it was too slow-paced compared to the other fantasy I used to read.
Then FotR came out and after seeing it I wanted to read the book, then I saw TTT and read the book.. and I think actually I read RotR before seeing it... but I'm not sure... so the first movie triggered it all but after that I saw the movies and read the books at the same time. I like to read the original work behind movies but when I read the books for the first time I had the images of the movies in my head and I focused on the storyline from the movies. But later when I re-read the trilogy I had the time to appreciate Tolkien's style a lot more, his elaborated (though sometimes slow) descriptions of Middle-earth and all the background stuff like the Council of Elrond which is so important in understanding everything.

I must admit that I shamefully watched the movies first. As a matter of fact I didn't even realize there were books until someone told me. But that was years ago, and I adore the books much more than the films now anyway,

I have always been one of those people who say you must read the books before you see the movies (and this applies to anything, not only LotR). I couldn't really escape reading the books, as they were read to me when I was little, but I did read them again for myself before seeing the movies.

I am usually very adamant about reading a book before it's movie comes out, so I must shamefully admit that in this case, I saw the movies first. The only good thing about this is that I loved the movies so much that I could not complain about the changes made once I read the books... if it had been the other way around, I probably would have ranted a lot about how they screwed things up.

I saw the movies first, but that was because I didn't know the books existed.

I was read the Hobbit when I was very very little, like under 4. Then I when i got a bit older like... 5 I was read the Lord of the Rings. It's one of those passed down the line kinda stories. I also read the books before the movies came out on DVD because I was (appartently ) far too little to see it in theaters). I made up for it when RotK came out... I saw it five times in the theaters...
