Discuss Eowyn here

Am I strange that I really don't like Eowyn? I even don't know why. She seems too plain for me. The same goes with Arwen...Maybe Tolkien wasn't creating femnale characters for my tastes?

But I much prefer book Eowyn, she seems more etheral but brave at the same time.

Arwen's my favourite character, and Eowyn would be too, but Peter jackson ruined her, with that love between she and Aragorn

This is true.. Tolkien definitely didn't give the women a very predominant role in LotR. It's like they are just there because it would be strange if there weren't women at all mentioned throughout the books. Arwen doesn't play any role in LotR (although the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen is told in the appendix) and Eowyn is equally down-played in TTT. She does have a bigger - and very important part - to fulfil in RotK but the way Tolkien writes her is.. like if she was a man. He is not an author to care much for emotions except Frodo and Sam's.

I never really liked how he wrote the Tale of Beren and Lúthien. I mean the story is beautiful but the characters never come alive for me. They are too two-dimensional and Lúthien is very much a Mary Sue...

Eä, do you also have feeling that she seems at the beginning somehow childish?

No, not really.. In TTT I just have the feeling that she is insignificant. The few times she is mentioned are when she supports Theoden after he talks to Gandalf, then she is described as being clad in white and how beautiful and proud she is (perhaps when the companions arrive at Meduseld..?) and then when Theoden appoints her the steward of the people in his absence.. And because he does that I get the impression that she must be very kind and gentle but also mature and wise.

Why do you think she is childish?

So it has to be reason of the translation then. Every word she spoke to Aragorn seemed flat and like she was still a kid. If you don't feel that, it has to be Polish version.

But if yes, much from the book escapes me...

Oh, i so hate translations! That's why i usually allways read evrything in hungarian(my language) and english too. People just can't translate it properly.

I don't know if it was the translation. She doesn't have many lines in TTT, does she? I already forgot and I read the book just a couple of weeks ago...

I mean, this part when Aragorn know he has to go but Eowyn tries to keep him in the fortress (I don't know English name). Her words are close to rather young woman who doesn't know life very well.

Just judge yourself if its really true or its my translation or personal feeling that only I have

Maybe because Eowym wants to be a warrior and Aragorn tries to explain her that she should stay? He looks like making her in right way.

^Sorry, I just edited my post.. I mean't that Eowyn doesn't have many lines in TTT. And you're right I'm sure she makes more of an appearance in RotK. I only just started re-reading that so I'll give my opinion when I get to that part.

I like Eowyn, because she's defiant of how people think about women, but I don't like how she more or less randomly decided to give it up and marry some guy who looked at her once and decided he loved her.

I liked Eowyn, but I didn't like the way that Tolkien wrote her, in that he made it sound really sad that she wanted to defend the people she loved just like her brother and the other men did.
It wasn't sad that Eomer wanted to do so, but because Eowyn was a woman, poor her... And then once Faramir came along she settled down ~like a proper woman~, got married, and softened up. That bothered me.

I like Eowyn's reasons to be a fighter but I don't like her as character. She is too much like Brienne in ASoIaF: dramatic warrior woman. Too much dramatic But hey, she wants to protect her people, that count as her pro.

Since I'm a girl and love horses, maybe I'm a bit prejudiced, but I like Eowyn. Out of the two female characters, Arwen is my favorite, but I like Eowyn too. Especially with her will to fight for those she loves.

I admire Eowyn for her ideals, strong will and personality. Sadly Tolkien isn't very good at describing women and it's clearly seen in Eowyn.
But I like her as she is.
