Beware_of_Italics,

I know exactly what you mean about your characters not ever shutting up. I have one character that just will not leave me alone! She always seems to start talking the moment I turn off my lights at night. It gets really annoying cuz that's when I'm trying to sleep!

But it's rather frightening when you think about it. When a character inside your own head in driving you nuts, you have absolutely no way to ingore or get rid of them. You have no defences at all...

I hardly ever get writer's block, but when I do, it lasts aagggessss. Alot of my stories end up in a distant file, where they're forgotten and quite useless. This one I'm working on currently, I don't want it to go under, but I really need to find time to work on it again. I'm a hopeless writer with "promise" as our teachers are so fond of saying.

Hey all you authors, see if you cna relate to this poem I wrote...

She's There

When night has fallen
And lights are dimmed
That's when she begins to speak.
The character inside my head,
Starts to whisper in my ear.
First she says "What would you have me do?"
And then "Could I do this?"
And by way of this silent speech
her tales become mine.
When I speak of this to others,
They all laugh and say,
"How can she speak?"
"She's not real!"
"She's only inside your mind."
But that's just it.
And I know somehow
She's real because
When I close my eyes

She's there.

I can sort of relate to it. :) I don't feel like my characters 'speak' to me (though often they do have minds of their own) but I certainly feel like they're living in my head! They're what I end up thinking about whenever I have a quiet moment...

LOL! Whenever "Rebecca" talked to me... well, she put scenes in my head or I'd have a funny quote from her in my head... I'd turn on the light, jot down a little reminder note of that scene, and turn off the light. (Keeping pen and paper near the bed is a must for me when I spend a lot of time writing).

And then another character (or Rebecca again) will step up to the plate. A lot of great scenes pop up that way, but losing that sleep isn't fun the next morning.

As I get more tired... my ideas deteriorate, or rather, reflect my lethargy and desire to go to sleep. lol. So I rarely have to wake up and write stuff down.
Though, I always make sure I have paper and a pen basically with me the whole time... and I generally end up with pages in the back of my school folders with lists of charatcers and little snippets scrawled all over them. :)

I'm Herenya's opposite. I't not uncommon for me to be lying awake at 11:00 pm, plotting and schemeing and listening me character's talk. (Those plots and schemes are frequently interrupted by mental phrases such as "Ladelia, shut up!") Ladelia is one of my characters, (the 'she' referred to in the poem I wrote).

Also, I wrote that poem at 10:30 pm... Another prime example of my brain not shutting off...

Ah, I admit I've tried to write a book, yes. But it turned only to another never-to-be finished project. But the worst is; when you are at the school and get sudden inspiration but when you come home, you forget about it at all. :(

Here's a hint for you Elf Girl.

Carry around a little notepad while you're at school. That way, when you have those sudden ideas, you can write them down at the first free moment you get. Then maybe you won't forget!

Yes, always carrying a paper and a pen is a really good idea. Especially when you get bored...

OO i love this thread as it makes me feel like less of an idiot!

I have attempted to write at least three of my own novels and each has fallen into a deep pit of uselessness -_- ONE DAY I WILL FINISH ONE!!

I find that my problem is that i spend too much time on the plotting, like i have Notebooks EVERYWHERE in my room full of ideas and so on. I never get round to the actually writting.

BTW, how do you guys pick names?? For citys and People, i have been having a tough time at the moment finding some :P

Names i find really easy. I've commandeered a baby name book from someone, and i just flip through that. I don't always use the names in it, but it's a good inspiration for coming up with my own. (if I just merge though two together and change that...)
So I suggest getting one of those - the weirder the names in it, the better, basically. It's also good sometimes to know what your names mean.
There are also a lot of good websites with name databases on them, that are good to use. Do a google search...

Places are harder, but I think they are generally less important than people's names. At the moment, I'm using words from another language, which seems to be working. Look at the places where you are and see how they have been named. That can be a good starting point. :)

The best way I come up with names is spelling things backward. You can come up with good people names (if you want odd sounding ones) or some really awesome place names. Examples:

Drows is 'sword' spelled backward
Niar is 'rain' spelled backward
Arries is 'Sierra' spelled backward

You get the idea...

I usually use this site for names, but at times i feel it isn't heling much. I have considered the backwards thing, and seeing them actually written down helps me so i think i will use that method for my places. thanks for the help ^_^
