After I read Eragon, I kept thinking to myself, I bet Brom is Eragon's father, you know, the whole time, the keeping secrets, 'He was like a father to me', and 'No matter what you think, you're sire was not from here Eragon.' And I was just hoping for that. After I read Eldest and the whole Murtagh and Morzan thing, I didn't sleep for days, because I was so angry. :explode: I'm a major geek, but I'm just fine with that.
Paolini certainly has a gift. For example, after the 6th HP book, and the Dumbledore Snape thing, I stopped reading the books, stopped watching the movies, etc. Paolini took my favortie character (Murtagh) killed him off (or so you think) in the first chapter, and brought him back at the end of the book evil and I'm still hooked.

Okay, that was a little long. Sry. :bounce:

You know, I secretly really wanted Galbatorix to be his father. I don't know why. Ha ha ha. Maybe because when I finally read it, I had just had a Star Wars marathon. Ha ha ha. I just think it would have been cooler. Ha ha ha. And maybe Morzan was his uncle, so Murtagh would have been his cousin. Oh well - brothers is a good thing.
Yeah, Murtagh's my favourite character. He's just so tragically miserable. I just love him. And when he was "killed off," I knew he couldn't have been. It just seemed to weird to "disappear" and then automatically figure they're dead. Especially with those two blasted twins. Grr! But it was a great comeback. I had no idea that he'd be a RIDER! I just always have this image of him being consumed with sadness and looks like he's on the verge of breaking down and losing it but somehow keeps his cool.
Oh, and I forgot to say that Eragon's "transformation" was a big surprise. I didn't expect it and almost didn't want it to have happened. Oh well. It's all good. Lots of praise to Chris!

Chris is a genius. But I secretly want Galbatorix to win, cause I'm evil like that, and I like Murtagh better than Eragon anyway. Murtagh is so brillaint, and I actually kind of expected him to be a rider, because he was as stron as Eragon when he wasn't a Rider. That potentially could be problematic for Eragon.

Alrighty, after waiting four months to get the book from my library, I finally got it and finished it in slightly more than 24 hours. I liked it very much for the most part, and thought the characters developed a lot more. Unfortunately I had already browsed this thread a bit before I read it, so I remembered that Murtagh is Eragon's brother and betrays him, so that wasn't much of a surprise.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but a couple times I was torn between throwing the book against the wall and snorting with laughter. Elessari and Morgothal??? Oy. Come on Chris, you can come up with less Tolkienesque names than those!

I'm glad that the book wasn't only from Eragon's perspective, though. It was nice to see things happening with Roran.

For some reason, the following quote made me burst out laughing every time I read it...

A hilt bruised his fingers, and he ripped it from the muck and slashed at the soldier’s sword hand, severing his thumb.

The man stared dumbly at the glistening stump, then said, “This is what comes from not shielding myself.”

“Aye,” agreed Roran, and beheaded him.

Eragon was starting to annoy me a bit by the end of the book. He's a bit of an idiot with Arya - she rebuffs him the first time, and then he pulls the exact same stunt a couple months later and expects things to change.

I kept feeling like we had a predictable sequence where Eragon learns things, is told and thinks he's amazing at fighting, and then is beaten and realizes he knows next to nothing. It's happened about five times now, and it gets a little old - after all that training with the elves, he still is beaten to shreds by Murtagh.

Ah well, I'm just nitpicking now. Overall I liked it, but I see areas where Chris P. could improve.

I totally agree with everything you just said. And that was my favortie quote in the whole book. And I also agree with what you said about Eragon being a complete idiot with Arya. By the end I didn't even feel sorry for him anymore, just irritated. Actually, I got to that point where I hoped Murtagh just killed him and got it over with.

...I was such an idiot whie reading the book.... When Murtagh dissapeared (got killed) I was tottaly angry, and didn´t read the book for about a week...... But actually I still think he´s a totaly great character in the book....
about the Eragon-Arya thing.... they annoyed me both.....(That and Katrina´s capture were the most sad parts in the book..)he blew the whole thing up... But somehow I totaly felt sorry for him after the transformation, and Arya rejected him again...
C.Paolini did a masterpiece in the end, and the last chapters were the most interesting ones for me...

I personally don't think much of his books, because I come from a family of readers, and by habit, we all strip books down to their most basic plot, which means I see the whole thing as being a rewriting of Star Wars.
At any rate, I have a bunch of friends who have been discussing it on a different forum, and I think one of them is a genius for coming up with this idea of what's going to happen in the third book.

Quote:
I think I'm really into these books... I've come up with a number of theories about what will happen in the third Alagaesia book by Paolini.

Eragon and Roran need to rescue Katrina - but where is she hidden? Is she still being held by the Ra'zac? I suspect that there will have to be a major break in the campaign and battles in Book III for the two (or three, if Arya helps) of them to find her - unless they find her in the course of the campaign. I think she may be in Helgrind, if the Ra'zac have her (unlikely, wouldn't she have been eaten?), or somewhere in Uru'baen, if Galbatorix or an underling has her captive.

How is Murtagh as a dragon rider so strong? How come Galbatorix's energy keeps on growing?
I think that in Paolini's world, people's souls give magical energy and power, along with other ways, such as 'natural' phenomenon (magic wells, springs mentioned in Eragon), and physical energy ('traditional magic' in the series)... Why do I think this? See Durza - he was strong in magic because he had so many evil shady spirits inside of him. He wasn't strong enough to rule them, so one or more took control of Durza-Carsaib.
What about Murtagh and Galbatorix? Once the two of them became Dragon Riders, wouldn't they, in theory, have the strength to rule any spirits that entered their mind? I think so.
Remember who said that if Saphira or Eragon was about to die, they needed to sever their mental connection or they'd die or go crazy? I think Galbatorix, when his dragon died, let his dragon's mind inside him. He did go crazy... but had two minds, and thus twice the normal magic power, if spirits/minds produce the power, as Durza would suggest.
I suspect Galbatorix got the idea that the more minds he imprisoned in his own, the more powerful he'd be. So he found a weak rider, the original traitor. He killed him, but as he killed him he opened his mind and said "Come on in - you won't die" and the weak rider's mind entered Galbatorix, imprisoned. As Galbatorix killed more and more riders, he did the same - growing stronger each time. This explains Brom's story, about when Galbatorix killed Vrael - with power coursing through his veins, he anointed himself King of Alagaesia.
Wait a minute! Didn't he just fight the most powerful Dragon Rider at the time, Vrael? Shouldn't he be tired? Really, really tired? Not if he just imprisoned Vrael's mind in his own.
If he could do it with dragon riders, then he could do it with normal magic users. So I bet he augmented his strength, and later Murtagh's, by weaker magician's and imprisoning their minds and magical strength in his own.
This explains why Eragon was confused when he first touched Murtagh's mind in battle above the burning plains, as if he had not contacted one mind, but many crying out as if imprisoned. "The consciousness of the Rider felt strange to Eragon, as if it contained multitudes; scores of distant voices whispered in the caverns of his mind, like imprisoned spirits begging for release."

With only one mind and body - or two if you count Saphira, Eragon would never be able to take on these two, the powerful Murtagh and Galbatorix - unless he opens the "Vault of Souls", explaining what Solembum said to Eragon. I suspect this is something or some place that contains a lot of good souls/spirits. In his plight, they'll enter his mind and let him use them and their magic power against Galbatorix. Eragon couldn't let an evil soul into his mind, so they'd have to be good.

Yeah, this guy spends way too much time thinking about this. I posted it because I thought it was an interesting theory that you guys might enjoy thinking over.

How early in the next book do you guys think Eragon will get the weapon from under the roots of the Menoa tree?

Alright -- I just decided to stop in even though I've only read up to chapter 3. I hope to read the rest of it when I recieve it for my birthday...

But I just felt like grieving over the loss of Murtagh. :'( He's my favorite character, and he's gone! Gone! I've been told to just keep reading...but I just needed to tell this to someone since my sister hasn't even finished the first one. *Sniff*

Yay! I did get Eldest for my Brithday! :D

EDIT: Hm, I would've posted again, but seeing as no one has replied... :confuzzled:

I've only read about a fourth of the book, but is it just me, or is Arya growing quite annoying?

She did seem to get a bit annoying . . . by the end it almost got predictable. But oh well.

Yeah, she really irritated me with the way she treated Eragon. I just wanted to shake her sometimes.

I dunno, I kind of felt like Eragon was the idiotic one. He does, as I said earlier in the thread, keep basically hitting on her even when it's obvious that she's not interested. I do think that Arya's not a very well-developed character, though - she's supposed to come across as all mysterious and Elvish, and ends up seeming a little shallow

And to me, it just feels a little awkward, knowing that they're going to fall in love (ew, that just sounded really corny or something )

She did seem kind of shallow, now that you mention it. It was really awkward . . . all of their interactions . . . I think Eragon is best if left to himself. Ha ha ha. And of course with Saphira.
