I think it was because his father was probably a good and noble man who hated the White Witch and here was our Mr. Tumnus working for her and he felt ashamed to be like that and his father wouldn't approve of his actions...that's how I've always thought of it.

That's probably right.  But Mr. Tumnus ended up not betraying Aslan --- thus making his father probably proud.
